Hey guy's. Need some input hear. Just bought a 97 sportster. Owner said the engine is seized. Lifted the engine hatch and to my surprise saw about a gallon of oil in the bilge? It looks like motor oil (10w-30). It doesn't look like the color of typical two-stroke oil? Don't know how long the boat has been sitting, it is in excellent shape and the motor looks like new? It was owned by an elderly couple that barlely ran the thing. They had lost the DESS key, so I can't try and roll it over. Any advice on where to start? Just checked it out, looks like they put 4 cycle oil in.

Re: 1997 sportster Engine rebuild advice?
Bring it to a sea-doo dealer and have them program a key for you, Then try to get it fired up, I dont know how the oil ended up in the hull, could even have a hole in the case. The early sea-doo oil was close in color to 4 stroke oil. Make sure you put new fresh fuel in it and check the needle and sets in the carbs, You dont want them to stick, you will damage the engine. If the engine is siezed then start pulling it from the hull to have a better look at the case.Last edited by Technical Support; 08-06-2009, 10:54 AM.SBT Tech Support is here to help with your problems.

Re: 1997 sportster Engine rebuild advice?
I tried to have the stealership program a key for me and they said they couldn't until the motor was fixed? I didn't understand why. It's the only one around me too. I tried to manually turn the PTO but had no luck, it was solid. I couldn't figure out why there was so much oil in the hull either? This is not my first rebuild, but first with these signs? Is there a way to bypass the DESS and jump it without damaging any electrical components in the boat?

They dont need a running engine to program a key. Just all of the wiring needs to be connected. When the key is programed correctly you will hear 2 beeps when the key is pluged in.SBT Tech Support is here to help with your problems.
