  • 97 seadoo GTX keeps stalling

I have a 1997 Seadoo GTX that keeps stalling on the lake. About a month ago I took it into the shop to get fixed. While they had it they came up with the recent rebuild they did had failed so they rebuilt the pistons and replaced the head. I just got it back at took it out and it did the very same thing. After about 40min out on the lake it doesn't matter what speed your going it will just shut down like someone turned off the gas and pulled the key. If you try to start it again it does nothing. After about 3-4 minutes it will start again but after about 15-20feet it stalls again and you do the whole thinkg over again and again. Any ideas what to tell the shop to look for????I would seem like an electrical problem to me but what do I know.

sounds like your sezing it . make sure the oil pump is working { and theres oil in the tank } and you need to find out how they rebuilt it and what the cyls were bored to and what pistons were used . for now you can pull the raves out and inspect the pistons for scoring . it could also be a fuel clogg , is your fuel valve stiff ? and did they tell you why happin to the first engine and also why there first rebuild failed ?

Exactly. From what you have said, nothing was done to actually fix the problem! Replacing the pistons and head cleans up the damage, but does nothing to prevent it from simply happening again! Either find out what else the shop did, or find a better shop.

These engines do not 'stall'. When they seize, damage is done.

I dont know the full skinny Im sure because they are repairing at thier expense. What I was told though the first time is that is was seizing because the prior rebuild was not done correct. He told me they sent it to the machine shop and ordered a new piston. After the work was done and they putting it back together they found a small crack in the head so the ordered another one and replaced it also. This morning I talked with them and he is still not sure why it is happening but it appears that the other piston will have to be redone now. As for who is doing it it is our local seadoo dealer. While it is nice that I am not getting charged for this work it is still a head ache wondering the next time I take it out if I am going to get stuck out on the lake again. Thanks for all the help this is great.:)

Quit screwing around and have them rebuild the fuel system, the carbs and the fuel selector valve......... I bet $10 bucks the internal filters inside those carbs are/were clogged up.

Every 1997 model GTX I ever saw, had/has clogged up internal fuel filters.

I talked with the shop last night and for what ever reason it is now the front piston. They are not sure why it happening but said they would call when they had more info.

its unbealavble that dealers and shops tell people { I DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPIN} somone needs to make a book of questions for customers to give the dealer or shop before letting them work on there skis , if the fail the test go to the next shop :-) i dont think i have ever did a rebuild and not told the customer what happin the last engine { AND FIXED THE PROBLEM } so it didnt happin again . i sure know i have never said I DONT KNOW .

I asked him about the filters and he said is was definatly something causeing damage to the pistons. I wonder about the oil pump??????????

I gave you a reason the pistons were damaged when I told you to have the carbs rebuilt.

Not a problem Bill. Im not motor enclined so I did not realize when you were telling me to rebuild the fuel system that you were also saying that is what damaged the pistons. They are closed today but I will call them in the morning and explain this to them. Thanks again.

That's ok, I do realize that most readers are here to learn. When 2 stroke motors get starved for fuel, they often sieze pistons.
