  • removing fuel tank 93 SPi

I purchased a 93 Seadoo SPi (Jul 04 SBT rebuild) about 4 months ago. Since buying, I have changed the pump oil, removed the oil injection pump and converted to premix, re-attached the lower crank case to the engine support bracket (it had been held on by 1 loose nut), checked the gap and cleaned the plugs with 800 grit sand paper, and lubed the PTO / drive shaft and carrier seal grease fittings. I have had the ski out 4 times and runs smoothly at idle and 3/4 throttle. Just a little shake at WOT.

Next project is to clean and rebuild the carb. Before doing that, I want to remove the gas tank and clean thoroughly, change the fuel filter, possible change the fuel lines, etc.

Q's: Can I get the fuel tank out through the forward access hole? Do I need to remove the oil tank to get the fuel tank out? Does the fuel tank even need to come out? Any suggestions welcome.

Wow ! I don't even need my glasses!

There are two ways to clean a fuel tank. You can remove the hold down straps, fuel baffel, move the oil tank ( no need to disconnect it from the hoses) and slide the gas tank up and out the access hole under the hood, or you can just remove the filler hose or baffel and stick a stiff wire ( coat hanger or acet lene welding rod ) with a rag secured to the end through the hole and swab out the tank.
They usually do not get real dirty, but they do collect some water in the bottom of the gas tanks.

You can make this job difficult, or you can make this job easy. Your choice.

Thanks, Bill, for the reply. I think I'll try taking it out.

      Later.

          Follow-up:

Tried the difficult way. Couldn't lift the fuel baffle out of the tank with the fuel lines connected. I think to get it out (easily) I would have to disconnect the 4 fuel lines to the top of the fuel baffle. Didn't want to go there yet (especially since they were put on with crimp clamps).

Tried the easy way. I removed the filler neck hose and filler neck inner "pipe." Siphoned most of the gas from the tank. Checked the siphoned gas from the tank for water and sediment (none). Stuffed an old T-shirt (no lint or loose threads) that one end I secured to a wire coat hanger. I was careful not to lose the T-shirt in the tank! Got the end of the T-shirt good and wet with fuel (no sediment).

Reattached all worm clamps, hoses, straps, and put the premix back into the tank. Called it a day (early morning, actually).

Thanks to all for this site.
