    What is the largest Sea-Doo PWC engine that I could wedge into my 1992 Sea-Doo XP with the current 580 cc twin carb stock engine? I am looking at replcing the engine and would like to know if I have to go back with another 580 cc or if I could move up to one of the larger engines with no or little trouble...

    In that family of engine, you can go 657X or 718 (720). You will need matching carbs and exhaust for each particular engine.

      ...in addition to the other bolt on parts, like flywheel, electronics, stator, etc.

        Is the "92 hull worth the trouble? Although it is in excellent shape, that short, flat hull sure isn't an enjoyable ride in rough water!

          Is there a jet ski that is confortable to ride in rough water without feeling like a boat? Via yahmaha-suv--- gross

              WELL, I guess I'm gonna bite the bullet and just order a replacement 580 for the old '92 XP. It's been a good boat all the years (I'm the original owner). Only problem I've had, until now is the tach working erratically. You know, I'm not real sure what is actually wrong with my engine anyway. Check this out...

              I was on a leisurely cruise on glass at WOT and noticed I was down on power. If I turned the bars to the left, it would actually slow even further. Suddenly, the boat seemed to foul a plug because she really started to labor and come off plane. She settled in the water, still running, but barely. No major smoke/fumes, no fluids, no odd sounds, just a stumbling, choking rev of 2000 rpm (still at WOT).

              I went ahead and stopped the engine, checked the plugs, and hit the starter. That's when I knew she was bad off...I heard the grinding sound then, and the starter was having a hard time turning it over. I had her towed in.

              THe next day, I cleaned her up, checked all external equipment OK, and hit the starter. She turned over realtively clean with no grinding sound, even hit once before I shut it down again.

              I'm at a loss here. I know it's serious, the thing is too old for it not to be (a lot of hours too), but the problem could be in the driveline too, maybe? Could the stator be the problem? And why would the direction of the turn bog the engine revs?

              HELP!

                It sounds like you probably have some crank bearing on their way out - I'd keep it shut off until you at least tear it down, or swap it - you risk case damage if it blows.

                  The first thing to eliminate as a possible problem is the pump. Remove the pump and make sure the prop spins freely and isn't grinding it's bearing up. Remove the pump cone and look to see if it has oil in it or any ground up bearings.

                  If the prop and pump are working smoothly, turn the motor over by hand, listening for any weird sounds or clunks from the crankshaft bearings.

                  You may not have a motor problem at all. But then, again, you may....
