  • Impeller turns hard.

I am rebuilding the engine on my 96 GSX 800, so I had the pumpu removed from the hull. I decieded that this was a good time to change the pump oil. I removed the plastice cone and drained the old oil out. I then put the cone back onto the pump and removed the set screw and filled it with new oil.
At that point I decieded to turn the inpeller by hand, and I could barely get it to turn. Is this the way it's supposed to be? I removed the cone again to see if there was anything in the way, and ther wasn't . But with the cone off it spun just fine. Is it possible to have the cone on too tight? I don't have a tourque wrench for those bolts but It dosent seem like its right the way it is?

You have let the impellor and the impellor shaft move back and allowed the flat bearing to drop out of the center. When you tightened the cone back on, you ruined the bearing.
Remove the impellor and pull the shaft out. You will see the damaged bearing. Replace it and be sure to not let that happen again.
Do not run your pump the way it is or you will ruin the pump and shaft too.
