  • Reusing a head gasket

I got a stock shaved head in the mail yesterday, but not the head gasket (two different shippers).
I got impatient and put that head on (2001 Superjet, 62t). I carefully removed the old gasket and carefully put it on the shaved head.
I bolted the head down to spec, then went riding. Engine ran great, no problems at all.
It was supposed to be a temporary solution, for one day only. But, it ran great. Should I replace the gasket as soon as I get it?

Also, the head I took off was marked 64U. The one I put on was a 61x.
What's the deal? As far as I know, the 62t SJ engine uses 61x cylinders, so why a 64U head? Does this have something to do with the dual carb configuration?
Because that's the only thing that seems to be missing from the 61x head, the two threaded holes for the airfilter plate (?). Also, the cooling passages seemed different.

    Re: Reusing a head gasket

Superjets don't use a 62T motor, it's actually a third 701 (we call it the 701S) and it's head is 64U. The only difference you'll notice is the cooling config, as you mentioned.

I tested Yamaha head gaskets for leaks during reuse. Most of my tests showed no drop the first reuse, but significant drops after that. I never recommend the reuse of any gaskets. I would change it as soon as you get a new one.

Thanks....I will do that. Getting one today or tomorrow, and swapping it doesnt take long.
