  • Yamaha GP800

Hey everyone! I'm heading out of town this weekend to buy a GP 800 and i'm a little nervous about it because i'm spending my own money on it and i don't feel like buying something that might break down and cause me a lot of trouble. Please let me know about the reliability of these skis (or the unreliability) Thanks a bunch!

    Re: Yamaha GP800

the GP800 is a great ski. just check it over good and be sure its clean under the seat. look for corrosion and signs that it may not have been mantained properly, which is the main reason they break down.
do a compression check on each cylinder , should be 130 to 150 range on a good engine. mainly check that all cylinders are about the same.
you can buy a gauge at any parts store
pull plugs and screw in gauge, hold throttle wide open while turning over enigne for about 5 to 10 seconds. check readings

If it's been in the salt, be sure to check the carburetors for corrosion with a mirror. They are very expensive and you can't see em. This model also has exhaust power valves that fail and wipe out the entire engine. Beware.

thanks guys, the location at where the ski is now is very far inland. The seller says that it has never been in salt water. i believe him because the location of where he is at is surrounded by lakes. How much does that compression tester normally run? Has the 2000 year model had any significant pros or cons about it?

          Re: Yamaha GP800

you can get a cheap tester for around $30. it wont be very accurate but it will work for what you need.
the power valves are the only issue on those models , althought i have never seen the problem they are said to cause.

how much is the asking price and how many hours is on the ski ?
          I'am in eastern NC also

            Re: Yamaha GP800

If you get the ski put the updated valves in right away. I had 4-5 800 motors with PV failures last summer and 3-4 on the 1200's.

The guy is asking 3800 to 3900. The ski is located in Lexington, NC not too far away from Charlotte i believe. I'm going to look at the ski on friday afternoon, then heading to charlotte to look around some more, at some of the boat places, and private sellers around the lakes. Those power valves, are they easy to install? Another thing that i'm worried about is the Ski being reliable for me. i dont want to spend that amount, and within 3 times taking it out, it break down on me and having to pay a bunch of money to have it fixed. Are they known to be dependable?

When i say Charlotte, i mean Fort Mill, SC. I can throw a rock and hit Lake Wylie.

                Re: Yamaha GP800

Find a good used 760 instead...no power valves....almost all all those power valve engines break.
