  • '94 Waverunner Pro VXR having engine problems! PLEASE help!

Last August I purchased a used '94 Yamaha Waverunner from my Uncle. I hadn't been run in a year or two, other than occasionally starting it up. The motor is in beautiful shape and has been well taken care of.

When I purchased it, everything ran great. I had changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, and blocked off the oil pump, opting to premix fuel instead. After a few months, it started to act strangely; at full throttle is almost seemed as if a cylinder was missing, sputtering and losing power momentarily. This problem was intermittent. I figured that it might have been cavitating, and ignored the issue.

That is, until it began doing it more often. At half throttle it began to lose power, as the engine speed changed several times a second. Last week, after we had finished skiing for a while, we started it up and it ran horribly. At idle, the motor would sputter and kick. When the motor kicked, the waverunner jumped forward with more power. It would also only get up to about 4,000 rpm.

We nursed it home at idle for two miles, and the strangest thing happened. It started to run much better, like when it just started having problems. With the intermittent nature of the issue, I am inclined to believe that it is not related to the carb. In fact, I would like to think that it is related to the electrical components, possibly the CDI or the ignition coil. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The motor starts fine it just doesn't run correctly.

I have the service manual and will be checking the resistances of both of those parts so that they can be compared to the stock readings. Please help! Let me know what you think. And sorry for the long first post, but I just wanted to be thorough. Thanks a bunch!

When you change the filter was there any evidenace of water or crud in it? If yes, you need to take all the fuel out of the tank and make sure is clean. On you boat is a snap as you have a nice big hood. Take the fuel pick up out and syphon the fuel out, once your near bottom you will be able to determine if it has water or junk in it.

On th electrical side do the simple stuff first, good battery, good ground.
