  • Pumps - Inspecting for damage

Any pump damage can severely effect the performance of your ski, including power during take off, out of turns, and top-speed.

Your intake grate, impeller, wear ring or, pump housing, stator vanes and nozzles all work together to give you good thrust. If any one of those components is damaged, performance immidiately suffers.

To inspect your pump you will need a feeler gauge, flashlight, and to get under the ski and behind it to do a good inspection. On most models you will also need to remove your intake grate for access to the impeller.

Start by inspecting the rear of the pump. Look at the nozzles to make sure nothing is broken or loose, all the nozzles move smoothly, etc. The first thing you see inside the nozzles will be the pump cone, bolted to the center of the stator vane section. If you have a Sea-Doo, this is the cone you remove to change the oil every fall (see our article here: http://server1.sbtontheweb.com/forum...ead.php?t=4088 ). The stator vanes will have several fins (See our article here: http://www.sbtontheweb.com/forum/showthread.php?t=305 ), and when rocks or debris pass through this section, the damage is usually on the leading edge of these fins. Closely inspect each fin for any chips ro chunks missing. They should all be straight across the leading edge.

Then look past the vanes, to the trailing edges of the impeller. Make sure you don't have any dings or dents in the blades.

Looking through the intake grate, on the underside of the ski, examine the leading edges of the impeller in the same way.

Next, measure your clearance between the inpeller and the wear ring, or, pump housing. This is the part the the impeller is housed in. Using your feeler gauge, check your clearance. If you have and gouges or scratches in the surface, or clearance greater than .75mm you must either change out your wear ring (See our article here: http://server1.sbtontheweb.com/forum...ad.php?t=13970 ), replace your pump housing, or replace your impeller.
