  • De-winterizing

After you have stored your craft for the winter there are a few things you have to do to get it ready for the season.

The first thing you should deal with is the fuel system. If you drained your fuel system before winter you should fill the fuel tank. The fuel lines will still be dry. In order to save wear and tare on your starter you should prime the fuel system. Remove the return line and blow into it with the fuel valve in the “on” position. If you have a restrictor in the return fuel line you must remove it first. Be sure to replace it after priming. Fuel should come out of the return fitting on the carburetor. When it does the fuel system is primed. Replace the return line.

Next you should install the battery. The battery should have been on a maintenance charge over the winter. Check the electrolyte level in the battery. Give it one final charge and install.

Check all the hoses, cables, and electrical connections.

Check all the bolts you can get to for tightness.

Try to start the engine. When the engine starts you should get a cloud of smoke from the exhaust. That is all the lubricant you put in the engine before winter. You might even foul the spark plugs. If you foul the plugs, install a new set, properly gapped and try again.
You should now be ready for an enjoyable season of riding.
