  • 650-650X What's the difference?

I have a 650X engine. I was told that Bombardier only made this engine for 1 year and that it was the predecessor to the 717. Am I running a 650 or a 717? What are the spec differences? HP, speed, etc....

The 657X was indeed one year only and close to 717. Between the 657 and 657X they changed the cylinder porting, case porting, intake porting, deck height, head design, electrical timing, etc. Think of it is a small bore 717.

Quick qusetion , are they interchangable with the regular 650? Would you have to get different parts to make it work in a 94 SPX. We just did a SBT replacement in one of the ones my buddy owns, but still have to do the other one. (will be getting a second SBT engine!!!)

They physically interchange with a 657, but there would be zero power gain using the 657 bolt on parts.

          Re: 650-650X What's the difference?

Should there be any notable difference in performance between the two engines? It seems that this engine is quicker out of the hole than most skis that are on the water where I ride. Clocking by my boat, it will push 65 mph. I think this 94 XP ski is in good enough shape mechanically and cosmetically to hang on to for a couple of more years. What if any mods would be recommended to improve the current performance. I'm sure it's all stock at this time. I have an opportunity to purchase a R&D reduction nozzle. Would it make an improvement on speed or bottom end?

if you GPS your ski you will find that your doing 45 to 49 mph :-)

the timming is differnt from the 657 to 657X you can not mix the flywheel and stators up or you will damage the motor .

I have used a GPS to determine speed and it shows between 56 and 58 mph. Maybe it's not all stock. This was done with a Magellan Sport Trac. I was informed that the former owner (Silas Gaither, former winner of the Survivor show) used this ski for racing. Outside it appears to be all stock. What are some things to look for without going into the engine?

Here's a few pics of inside the ski. It appears to be all stock to me.

You have what appears to be a stock 657X XP. The head bolts have been removed, as there is no white paint on them. My guess would be that the clyinders have been off as I see no paint on the exhaust manifold gaskets. If the base gasket is still white where it hangs out around the edges of the clyinders, then the clyinders have not been removed.

BTW, It looks like it is in very good condition compared to most 94XP's that I see.

Yes, very clean ski. The 650X is rated at 80 h.p. which is 5 less than a 720 (85 h.p.) but 10 h.p. more than a regular 650. I have a 93XP with a 720 in it. It has a groupk sleeper kit and some other mods and it runs a solid 57 mph on the GPS. Runs side by side with a stock 96XP. I would guess a 94XP(650X) would run a true 50mph since a 95XP (720) runs a true 52-53mph...

The gaskets are no longer white. They appear to be black or dark gray. If the cylinders were removed what mods could have ben done internally?

BTW.... this ski holds its own with everything running on Pickwick Lake in Tennessee, with the exception of some of the 2002-2003 Sea Doos. I run across an RXP yet. I can't hang with these guys but I get 'em out of the hole almost every time. I guess because my ski is much lighter. Maybe it's just in real good shape! I'll try another GPS. However the Magellan is only 1 MPH off from my vehicle speedometer. Guess I should get it checked also. LOL
