  • 96 GTI trouble starting after crash

My neighbors son crashed my 96 gti into a dock today doing about 30mph thankfully he was not injuried at all. I wish Icould say that for my ski. I finally got it working great all new jet pump drive shaft ski was running great. The cover for the stroage compartment was crushed and the hull has a small crack in it. The ski will not start anymore. All wires are hooked up has fuel and plugs were new. Engine djust sounds like it wants to start but just keeps turnng over without starting. he plugs fouled and were changed and then I put a new set in an hour later and they fouled. I checked to see if there was water in engine (took out plugs and tried to start no water) no water. Engine will not start and dont know what to do ?? Any help would be appreciated. I have read thru the posts and fixed my 97 xp thanks to some of the great posts.

check the spark plug wires to see if there pulled out of the boots partway . that would couse weak spark and fouling of the plugs

will try in the morning did not think of that. What is weird though is I took the plugs out of my 97xp which worked fine put them in the gti and it would not start. I then put the plugs back in the xp and then the xp would not start I went out and bought new plugs for the xp and it now starts up fone. Thats weird to me????

Did you look to see if those plugs were wet? If they get wet (water/oil/fuel), they're pretty much trashed. You can dry them and clean them, but it's not usually worth the effort unless they're pretty new.

yes plugs were wet from the 96 gti that crashed and it seems like plugs keep fouling just put new ones in today wont start and the plugs are fouled already??? Cant figure out what is wrong after the crash. Ski has not started in 3 days. I am open for any suggestions

See if you are getting spark. Do this by holding the plug body against a piece of grounded metal and verify that it's sparking. Careful of fuel vapors and other combustibles when doing this. Basically look in to the entirety of the electrical system. Can you get any pictures of the ski? Perhaps seeing the damage will give people ideas.

no did not beat him up.. Just happy that the kid is ok. Parts can be replaced not people so we got lucky. The Ski did start this morning but it looks like it is vibrating a lot more then it did?? What would cause oall the vibration. The driveshaft is not bent and everything on the outside looks good??

A whack like that could have messed up the motor mounts. Might be best to just take it in to a dealer and have them check the alignment. You could probably save a lot in cash if you removed the pump etc. yourself.
