  • Rotary valve oil change

Hi, here's a question: Is there an easy way to change out the oil in the rotary gear cavity on my 91 GT 580 without a hull full of oil? How the heck do you get down there at the oil line and get the oil out without making a big mess?

    Thanks, Joe

    Re: Rotary valve oil change

theres no reasion to change the oil unless your changing brans or if you have water in your oil , but what you can do is pull the oil line from the return line on the tank and pump it out with a drill pump .

      Re: Rotary valve oil change

      Thanks for the reply.

Since i believe my rotary valve seal is weeping, I was wondering if I could remove the oil pump, put on the block off plate, run premix, and put 80W90 gear oil in the tank just for the rotary shaft/gear area.

I know it's not the *right* thing to do, but I don't have the time/money to do a major overhaul on this old, seldom used machine.

      What do you think?

        Re: Rotary valve oil change

I run 15w40 pennzoil in my tank with a ball valve on the oil line,

All I do is take the seat off before I crank it and turn on the valve, I need to do that anyways to make sure there are no fumes in the ski...After I finish riding I turn it off and park it...

simply but you must turn the valve on!!

          Re: Rotary valve oil change

Hi, why 15w40? Motor oils have detergent in them, and other additives to deal with combustion byproducts. Gear oil has anti-wear additives to work best with preventing friction on gear sets, bearings, etc. If it's only for the rotary valve gear, gear oil should be sufficient. ?

However I do remember something about certain standard transmissions that call for #50 oil, and don't recommend 80w90 gear oil. Anyone??

How is your seal leakage/smoking with the 15w40? Using any?

            Re: Rotary valve oil change

dont smoke and dont leak, the oil is thicker than the 2 stroke oil so it doesn't leak at all

Why 15w40? Because I have a unlimited supply, so it is cheapest. (free) lol

              Re: Rotary valve oil change

How much oil were you using before? Lots of smoke? I suppose 15w40 is good diesel oil. Maybe it will burn off better than gear oil with what leakage there still will be. Don't know what the extra sulphur and phospher additives in gear oil would do in a combustion environment.

I dumped the oil out of my tank in preparation of the changeover. I need to get a block off plate and remove my pump yet. Where are they available? I've got the old 587 Rotax.

Thanks for the info! Great to get help/info on these machines.

I've parked the machine for the season, so it will be next spring before I go further (getting cold up here already..)
