Re: Cost to have starter replaced

you can winterize a ski with a bad starter , just not as good as you can with a good starter .

Re: Cost to have starter replaced

Got them back Monday night.... paid $30 each for diagnostics... They said they blew the 1200 water out but didn't do anything else for winter.... The 800 had the water blown out my all of my trying to get it started.... :( I could actually get it to run about 15 sec. at a shot...

Here is the estimate breakdown on the 1200....

      Battery 59.99
      Starter solenoid 49.29
      Starter 314.95
      Winterize 85.00
      Plugs 8.97
      Labor 240.00

So now I'm trying to find a manual and I'll see what I can do to do this all myself... :D

If that shop cared about their customers as much as they obviously do about the money you would be in great hands.

Unfortunatly, It's plain to see that customers don't even come in a close second to the cash.

Do the work yourself, that stuff is mostly unbolt and reinstall, pretty basic.

            trgtshooter

The first thing you need to do is check your starter.
Use your car batery to jump it with the ignition turned off.
Negative contact is the bolt into the motor.
Positive contact is the small bolt on the side of the starter.

Then check your starter relay by jumping it.

The battery you can check with a meter to see how much it drops when you push the start button.

When you test each component you will know what to replace.
I have two GPs and I have all of the parts you have listed I am close to Chicago and could ship to you UPS.

These are all easy to replace the relay is in the electrical box and the starter is under the exhaust at the front of the motor
You can reach under the exhaust and do it by feel.

            Could ship
            BR8HS Plugs (3) $7.50
Starter NEW $225.00 I may have a used one also(not sure)
Starter relay NEW $45.00 I may have a used one also (not sure)

Battery Not good for shipping unless its a dry battery.

Re: Cost to have starter replaced

Looks like the parts drawings of 800 starter and 1200 starter are different.
                    I would not use a 800 starter.
Relay will burn up if it gets to hot from cranking.

The shop I had it at, told me oh no.... you need to buy another one.... sheesh... were they trying to not only hook me on labor, but parts too? Not going back there again...

                        Thanks for the help. :)

Re: Cost to have starter replaced

                          UPDATE!!!!

Took the 1200 to another shop.... my brother uses him but is 200 miles away. I don't remember if I had mentioned in other posts... but I originally took my 800 and 1200 in to the shop. 800 not running would not run more that a few seconds and then winterize the 1200. 800 has blown motor... an you know the rest on the 1200....

New shop.... yes 800 has problems and has had non-standard work I doubt that it is worth fixing... 1200.... you ask.... blown fuse!!!!! There was some hesitation in the inital crank up so solenoid could be suspect....

                          Go figure... :)

Re: Cost to have starter replaced

Glad to hear the good news on your GP1200. I also got the "run-around' from a number of dealers when my GP had problems a couple of years ago. Finally found a local tech, Watercraft Services, who is trustworthy and does good work at a fair price.

When I decided to replace the motor, I wanted to try it myself. It was time consuming, but fun and interesting. A lot of people on this forum helped out with advice and tips.

If you decide to re-power your 800, I encourage you to consider what SBT has to offer, and to do it yourself if you have the time. You will gain a much better understanding of how your ski works, and you will get the satisfaction that comes with doing a job well.

                            Good luck.

The dealer I have the waverunners at has already mentioned SBT and spoke highly.... unfortunately, I'm gettin too old and stove up to do the major work myself.

I have really appreciated this forum.... :) I'm sure if I were to give the motor swap a wack, this forum would be right behind me helping...

                              Thanks.

Did you get your 1200 isues resolved.
You need to have at least one of you'r toys running when it warms-up.
I need to work on mine also but it is way to cold.
Did the dealer give you compresion #s on both skis this would tell you a lot.
Hope you get that bad boy running on time.
