  • Cost to have starter replaced

Just took ride in to a shop I have never used. They said the starter was out and needed a battery and new starter switch. Is it ok here to ask what neighborhood the cost should be? They are talking 700+

i think its too much... i say battery cost is ~$65 you can do it yourself and a starter should be $250 to $350 give or take a few$ hope it helps.

      New parts at Riva cost

      GP1200 parts

Start Button (you may need more than the button) $5.39
      Starter $404
      Battery $50.00

Why dont you fix it yourself,if you were up here Hoffman Estates Illinois Im sure I could do it for around $400.
I have parts that I could swap to make sure you were not buying parts you did not need.

hard for me to believe that both the starter and starter switch just happened to go out at the same time... I would start with a new battery first... I have seen rebuilt starters on ebay for <$200... if you feel more comfortable with a new one, buy from either Riva or Island Racing.

If you look around you can find starters for less.
I bought one for my triple piped GP this summer I had alredy fixed my old one and it just made sense.
In the part I bought a Goki starter it was a big mistake thay are made from realy cheap material.
It lasted for about 10 starts.
          You can do this yourself.
I have heard about switches going bad but have not seen it myself try jumping direct to your starter from from a car battery with the car's engine stopped.
If the engine wont turn over then starter may be bad.
I am assuming that you can turn the engine over by hand and it is not seezed.
The switch can be tested with a multi meter.
Your starter relay can be jumped to test it.
          Battery.
          Relay.
          Start/Stop switches.
          Starter.
          Cables a Conections.
These are all easy to test if you have time.

700 DOLLARS????? HOLY CR@P!!! Man i gotta start raising prices:)
you can do the whole job yourself if you have a 10mm & 12mm wrench and a phillips screwdriver.
go with an aftermarket starter ( we stock them, much cheaper than an oem )
try a new batt first--- that you can definately do yourself in 30 seconds.

If you decide to do the job yourself and need help you can always call us and we'll offer assistance over the phone as best as possible.

Re: Cost to have starter replaced

Whoa!!! Thats Insane. Lets Do The Math
                  Rebuilt Starter Approx $200.00
Labor For Starter Replacment $70.00 Thats What I Charge On Gp 12
                  Battery Approx $60.00
Starter Switch Approx $40.00 For The Assembly. $35.00 Labor At Most.
                  $405.00 Total.
Where Is The Other $300.00 Coming From? I Wonder What Their Markup On The Starter Is. Dont Pay The High Dollar Cost Of A New Oem Starter. You Can Even Get Your Starter Rebuilt For Under $200.00 Also. I Have Them Done All The Time At A Local Starter Alternator Shop For Around $125.00 If The Armature And Housing Is Good. This Includes The Brush Assembly And Bearings And Or Bushings Replaced And New Seals. Good As New. I Would First Replace The Battery And Check The Start Switch. An Easy Do It Yourself Test. $700.00 Way Too Much. Its These Kind Of People That Take The Fun Out Of Pwc. Good Luck.
WATERCRAFT SERVICES. PROVIDING THE RESIDENTS OF HOUSTON AND SURROUNDING AREAS WITH QUALITY WORK ON THEIR PWC AT A FAIR PRICE.

Oh My God. $700.00. These People Are Nuts. I Just Had The Starter And Batt Replaced On My Wifes 2000 Yamaha Xl 700. $310.00 Parts And Labor. Thought That Was Fair. I Purchased A New Battery Also $57.25. I Would Tell These People Who Are Trying To Rip You Off To Get A Life. They Are Insane. Dont Pay It.

Re: Cost to have starter replaced

$700.00 must be the majic number for people taking advantage of you. 10 years ago i had a VXR which needed a new intermediate shaft. i was just getting into the sport again and didnt know better. this shop in jacksonville (which is out of business now) charged me $700.00 to replace it. it wasnt untill a few years later i realized i was taken advantage of. the same goes for the dealer winterizing your ski. $50.00 to fog the motor....come on.
