  • '97 XP 800, Problem starting

I have just recently purchsed a Sea Doo '97 XP 800. I have ordered a workshop manual for it and when I get it I'll be doing some of the suggested adjustments etc.

In the mean time, whenever I try to start the engine, it will keep on cranking and would not start for a long time. I think that it may be getting too much fuel and flooding. I then start it with the fuel off and after some time it will start. I usually flatten the battery trying to start it and ends up having to run jumper leads to the car.

Once started, I do not have problems with it, runs well at high speed but have a few missed firing at lower speed, though it does not stall the engine. Runs well at idle as well.

If I stop it after having a good run, it will start straight away, but if I leave it for 5 minutes, I have this starting problem again.

Where I am is in the tropics (generally about 30 degrees C - about 85 F) so starting in cold weather is not an issue and I never use the choke during starting.

Another thing, if I start it out of the water (with just the hose connected) it starts straight away. I guess it may have something to do with light load.

Can anybody point me to the right direction of where to start checking.

    Thanks,
    FM

Sounds like it's time to go through the carbs. A general cleaning, new filters and probably new needles and seats will probably set you right.

I always like to start my ski on the trailer out of the water, right before I back them in. Let them run for a few seconds, then shut them off and back them in the water. That way they crank on the first touch in the water, and you don't drain your battery, or wear out your starter.

For what its worth I had the same problem on my 96 xp with the same motor. when it wouldnt start I put the charger or jump it with a battery and it would start right up and it wasent because the battery was low. And changing to a good battery {YUASA} and replacing my ignition module { used off ebay) and its been fine since. The black wire on the ignition module was way out of spec when I ohm tested it. I do have a second module I may sell if its the same. lmk jim 574-288-2986

Typically, new needles and seats in the carbs will fix a problem like yours. It is leaking fuel past the needles when you park it.

Just for kicks, clean all ground connections. Remove them, scrape the paint, clean and reconnect them.

Thanks you for all the handy hints. The carb was supposed to have been just reconditioned by the dealer prior to purchase and I could see that is is very clean.

Starting it just before putting it into the water appears to work quite well. As soon as I get the manual,I'll do a bit more maintenance on it. I'm not game enough to work on the carby until I get the manual.

Re: '97 XP 800, Problem starting

I finally tracked the problem to the battery having high internal resistance.

The battery was holding it's charge and would crank the starter motor for a while before it would get flattened. However, when I checked the battery voltage, it was about 12.6 volts (which was ok) before starting the motor and it then drops to just below10 volts when I crank the engine.

I replaced the battery and now starts first go all the time.

                Thanks for all the suggestions.
