  • To buy rebuilt or just replace pistons and rebore?

I have a 1997 Yamaha WaveVenture 1100 and recently had it overheat for some unknown reason. I read many of your site's threads and have found them very helpful.

I am torn between buying one of your rebuilt engines or just buying parts from you.

I have stripped the engine down to the crank case housing thinking I would need to get this far to take the core out before buying one of your rebuilts. Now, I am torn. I looks like the crank is in good shape and just needs to be flushed to clean it of any particles that may have dropped down when the piston failed.

I would like to ask your advice whether it is better to (1) buy a rebuilt or (2) buy new pistons and related stuff from you, have the head and cylinders machined, clean the crank case and but it back together again? Hope you can help as I fear bringing it back to the dealer and getting the usual "conflicted" answer (i.e., buy a new angine from us!).

Thanks and you guys are great and I haven't even bought my first thing from you yet. But, without you, I would never have gotten this far to begin with!

if your sure your crank is 100% ok and you can do the topend your self it would be a lot cheeper then buying a full motor , on the other hand you can not beat SBTs warranty for there short block .

Fromt he pictures you sent me (you can attach pictures in threads you know) I would not reuse that crank. You have significant aluminum missing from your #3piston and significant gauling. That metal has undoubtedly attatched itself to your crank bearings, and it will not last long if you just do a top-end job. I recommend a full rebuild or replacement.
