  • possible bad starter?

I just did a top end. Battery tests good, starter tests good(but was not tested under a load). It will crank good with plugs out, have to fight to get it to crank with plugs in. I have gone over all electrical connections. Today i disconnected the starter wires and jumped the starter directly from a non running vehicle, it did the same....would not crank over. It will crank with the plugs in but i have to continuosely hit the start button, but eventually i can get it to crank with the plugs in until i kill the battery. The motor sounds good when cranking over, but yet to get it started due to what i believe is a worn starter. I have good spark. Does this sound like a worn starter? Or could this be something else? Any other ideas much appreciated before i drag it to the dealer.

    Thanks

sounds like a bad starter since you jumped to the starter its self .

I kind of figured. But, before i dump another 275.00 into a new starter(this one is only 2 years old), but i think i burned it up trying to start my last engine which was never gonna fire....is there any other possibilities? Sorry for second guessing anyone, this thing just has become a moneypit.

$275 for a new starter? Holy crap, I'd just get one off of ebay or have yours rebuilt, might be cheaper. Go with oem starter if you do, I never had any luck with aftermarket ones.
I am sure Bill O'neil can hook you up with a better price.

Flyboy, The solenoid often fails when you are trying to start a ski that just won't start. It could be the starter motor, but usually just the solenoid (about $35)..

Jump a wire directly from the positive side of the battery to the lug on the stater motor. If the starter is grounded, and it is good, it will spin the starter motor. If it doesn't, you may be able to slavage it for about $30 worth of new brushes and a commentator plate, sold at any SD dealership.

              Bill,

The solenoid is farely new, only one season on it. I will test it though. If it tests ok hopefully i can salvage the starter. Are they easy to rebuild, never tore into one?

If you have patience, it can be a simple thing to replace brushes. Hard part is getting the lock ring off to remove the clutch so you can get it apart.

hot tip: Draw lines on all three pieces of the starter body so you get it back together the same way it came apart.
