What ski do you have? I believe your rotary valve should have a 147 degree cutout. The only way what you described could happen is if you have the wrong valve, a 130. THis however has nothing to do with your starting problem. Read the tech article on hard starting.SBT Tech Support is here to help with your problems.

Frankey, 18-20 degrees ? Where did that come from ? he is not setting the ignition timing.........
The old 587 engines use a 130 degree Rotary Valve. The top edge Valve should be about at the pointer mark on the case with the mag piston at TDC.
Do not confuse my postings about 147 and 152 degree valves with settings for 130 degree valves. They do not sit in the exact same places as each other. That is why they make degree wheels and service manuals.Bill O'Neal
I think I confused a couple threads - I could have sworn this one said he had a 1992 ski.
Anyway, yes you should have a 130 cutout valve, and you should time it to 115. There is a tech article that lists all this.SBT Tech Support is here to help with your problems.

The jetting in the 587 Mikuni SBN should be right on the money.
Check to see if it floats ! LOL!
If you always go by the closing timing, you cannot go wrong no matter what valve you are trying to set.Bill O'Neal
