  • I got water coming out of my spark plug holes!!!

    I have a 95 Seadoo Xp 720,

As it says in the title I got water coming out of my spark plug holes. Heres what happened. I was on a lake and came to a stop and turned the motor off. Somehow the water got rough and the ski flipped from a stop and me and my friend fell off. We got back on, and then it would tip on us again. When the water calmed down I climbed on it and it wouldn't start. It was barely cranking. I had a boat tow us in and when I put it on the trailer I took the seat off and the hull was pretty much filled with water. I doesn't start now but cranks. The battery is good and the starter is new. I took the filter off and there was water in the carbs. Later on I wanted to see if I had spark. I took both plugs out and hit the start button, water sprayed out of the spark plug holes. Water was also dumping out of the exhaust. I think I got all the water out but I was wondering how bad this is. I've never owned any kind of watercraft before so i'm new at this. Please help me out with some tips and tricks.

This may be real stupid and some of you will probably laugh, but I was thinking about installing a bilge pump. Last week I had it docked in the water and while we were eating, water got in the hull from somewhere. I was going to drill a hole under the grab bar and install a pump near the bottom of the hull. Would that help and work?

Also if I do need a new motor where a good place to buy one?

Sorry for the long post. I need a lot help.

My advice would be, yank the plugs and turn it over blowing all the water out. Dump oil down the plug holes and through the carb throats. Most likely your engine is done though, just my opinion. You will probaly eat a bunch of plugs though cause they will foul out, but you need to get that thing lubricated again. It may last a few weeks, but i have been there with a water filled engine, they don't last.

    Good Luck

Thanks, I think I got all the water out. I held the start button and let it shot out till it stopped. I wasnt sure what to put in the spark plug holes and carb tho.

BTW: After I get this fixed, how would I prevent it. I wasnt even moving at the time. Every time it flips over, I need a new engine? There must be something to stop that right?

I am no pro, but i would get a can of fogging oil and squirt it down the plug holes and in the carb throats, soak both, like i said it will eat plugs but you may be able to salvage the engine. Do this with the engine not firing......so cap the plug wires so ya don't get zapped or cause an explosion. Good luck my man, hope it works out.

To prevent it, flip the ski the right way........i believe if ya turn it over the wrong way the water works it's way through the exhuast right to the engne. There is instrunctions on the hull somewhere which way to flip it. Like i said, not a pro, just ate alot of engines out of boneheaded mistakes(take no offense).

            Good luck

Re: I got water coming out of my spark plug holes!!!

you could search the forums on this topic and get some great input. there is allways a variety of technique to get the job done. most important be safe. get your boat to shore on trailer etc. if you suspect hydro lock quit trying to start it . as you did pull plugs, ground wires, blow water out,get some premix in there ,sometimes i just use the choke to get it started. get it running right then and now,and ride it .easy for a little while. if all feels good ,your back in the saddle again. dont wait for a day or so. or your certain to be doomed. got to get the water and condensation out, before rust sets in. i allways carry spare plugs, some simple tools etc. if im riding and i know im going in, ill pop the teather on my way in the drink. i wear mine on the wrist instead of my vest. snowmobilers do the same thing when they race on the water. i think thats neat to watch. kill the engine before it goes all the way over. rite your boat in the correct rotation, should be a decale on back of the boat. i guess i have said enough , dont want to bore you to much. best of luck. kevin

Re: I got water coming out of my spark plug holes!!!

You need to get to the store NOW and buy some fogging oil; spray it in AFTER cranking the motor over without the plug in and get as much water out of it as possible. After spraying the motor down take it to the lake and get on it and run it for about 30 minutes real good. Also when you dump it you will notice a sticker in back make sure you turn it over the correct way and when you got it towed in how fast did you tow it in. If over 3 -5 miles an hour that is where most of your water in your motor got in I believe as you have to remove or pinch off your lines to prevent water coming into the motor. GET the ski on the water AFTER this as fast as possible and get it to push out the water and lubricated with the fogging oil. It might be okay still hope for the best but if not buy a motor from SBT here and you will have a warranty.

Re: I got water coming out of my spark plug holes!!!

Flipping the ski the wrong way may have been your first mistake. Depending on how fast you towed the ski back to shore, that can fill an engine with water as well.

Speaking from experience, I used to tow my ski behind my fathers boat when I didnt want to ride it. Unfortunately when you do that, because all skis have a jet intake and a nozzle, the water is forced in the intake and into the cooling system. However, the cooling system dumps into the exhaust inside your engine.

When your engine is running, the water is forced out with the exhaust. When your engine is off, the water pools in the waterbox until it fills your entire engine. This happened to me and cost me an engine. Since I have replaced the engine and installed a valve on the cooling system intake.

As others have said, get out and ride your ski hard. That is the only way to attempt to dry it out.

Re: I got water coming out of my spark plug holes!!!

Thanks for the help. I put some premix in there today to get it lubed up little. then i was getting a low draw from the battery and had to leave to go to work. I will try some fogging oil and i'm going to try to tip it on its side. I never heard of fogging oil, Whats is it and where can i get it? walmart i guess?

Re: I got water coming out of my spark plug holes!!!

you need to get the engine running asap , { you did not get all the water out by cranking the engine over } it take about 30 min of running to dry out the bearings . your engine is pretty simple to get running ,

if you can turn the ski on its left side , with the spark plugs out crank the engine over and pull the choke out { this will flood the engine with fuel } and get the most water out , make sure your spark plug wires are grounded on the ground post . when you think most of the water is out then put your spark plug back in and try to start it { do not touch the gas } if it starts let it idle for a min . then very slow try to give it gas . if you get it going you need to get it on the water and run for a good 30 min and then fog the engine good when you get back .

one trick to starting a wet engine is to get a propain tourch and heat the sparkplug tips untill the are red { do both at the same time } put the pulg in as fast as possable with just about 3 or 4 turns get the wires on and crank it over { NO GAS } let it idle as said before . it might take a few time to get it going but it should run fine run an extra mix of oil in your fuel tank it will help .

you dont need fogging oil , just put the same oil you use for your injection tank in a spray bottle .

you can get fogging oil at any auto parts store walmart or dealer.

what happens is when u flip them over they suck in water...the best way to fix that is if u flip it over u got to take the spark plugs out and spin the motor over to shoot all the water out as soon as u do it, that sounds fun doesnt it....jet skis arnt good flip over things which i dont think any engine is good when its flipped over espcially when water is sucked into it..what happens to a jet ski is when u flipp it over it sucks the water into the pistons and when u go to crank it that water is in there so it holds pressure down on the pistons and will cause u to start messing up pistons thats why it was shooting out of the spark plug holes. But i have to agree with them more likely that motor is a goner
