  • xl760 starting issues

I have had problems starting for the first time at the beginning of the season or after a week or more of not starting. After the initial start it is fine. I usually have to but a jumper on it to start. It doesn't matter if the battery is brand new. It has been this way since we purchased new. Suggestions?

It may be that your ski's instrument panel drains the battery, even when it's not running. Consider purchasing a Battery Tender and keeping it on the ski's battery when it's not in use.

I thought of that and have been disconnecting the battery when I will not be using the jet ski for more than a week. When I go to use; the battery is showing a full charge but it will not start unless I hook a charger up to jump start. Once it starts the first time it is good for the whole weekend or more with somewhat regular use.

No. It turns over. If I don't use a jumper it will eventually foul the plugs. Although the battery indicates fully charged (I had the same situation with a brand new battery which was fully charged) it does not appear to be turning over fast enough to start.

been like this since new ? did you ever take it back to the dealer ? use a volt meter and test how many amps the starter draws when cranking . it could just be a bad starter .

Yes. I took it back to the dealer (Bob Logue in Williamsport,PA). they said there was no problem. After a couple of trips I got frustrated and gave up. I do not know if they put a volt meter on it. How do I check that?

Check both your power leads going to starter(ground usually goes to starter mounting bolt)...pos and ground...make sure they are tight and not corroded.Check the ends of these leads also, and make sure wire is not frayed.

If the wires and connections are all good...I agree with 1fast...may be the starter itself.

Xl 760s are hard to start if not used often enough. It's choke is inefficient and the ski requires a little prime to start for the first time of the day. Pour 1/2 shot glass of fuel down airbox cap and start engine. If you are using choke, use full choke and NO throttle. Security feature drains battery as it sits at a good rate...Start ski out of the water for first time of the day and give it 3-5 good revs with throttle before putting in water.........
