1.) I bought the ski used from family about 5 years ago. About the same time i was flushing the ski hit the throttle and the rpms went out the roof, pulled the d.e.s.s. key off but that didnt kill it, trying to think what to do i went for the fuel shut off as a friend at the same time as i was turning the valve to off, put the key back on and it died, since that one time its never done that agian but now currently and part of last season i think i am having a dess problem or what seems to be but not sure. Heres what it does i normally get the 2 beeps and it starts right up, i idle out start to plane and goes into what at first seemed to be 1 cylinder type power and a little shake, but it doing this more frequent notice that when its doing this some times its not as bad and dosnt come down from plane nearly as bad other times it falls back into the water, Iswapped out the entire front control box lanyard and all with a friends 96 same thing didnt help. It does this on the trailer also and will not hit rev limiter, When you let off the gas it never dies when in water or tralier just idles fine but start giving it gas from idels it try to jump out the water but just bogs. i have font that sometime pulling the key off and it beeping 2 and round and round many times it will finally go. But i have just held it wide open when its boging and finally it goes so it doesnt have to have the lanyard removed to begain running full speed agian, I have trimmed the plug wires back , did not help, tried running fuel on reserve but didnt seem to be any differance, when it was bogging on tralier i tried to put fuel down carb manully to see if there was a rpm pickup but was none, i put a bottle of sea foam in fuel last time out took filter under handle bars off and cleaned a very small amount of stuff out of it, and out of fustration beat up on my coil pack a little for last option sack and the thing ran last weekend without one single problem 2 tanks of fuel, havnt tried it agian to see if im just dreaming but what do you guys think???

2.) Does the location of where a seeadoo is sold new the dealer, adjust the ski for the elevation, is there a differance in one from the coast sea level to say about 2000ft above? timing or carb settings?

3.) On to another area im looking to take it apart this fall/winter for some serious mods I want it to try and pull my arms off best as possible on 92 fuel, it has still a stock impeller which looks pretty bad, whats the gap between the wear ring and impeller suppose to be? it has a bad vts box, i keep up all the way, How and what do i need to reach a new top speed ? PUMP?Impeller? whats the most cost effective areas to work in? intake grate or ride plate or both work the best to keep it hooked with out loss of speed.
Thanks To Everyone For you time!

Remove the carbs. Inside you will find a fuel filter in each carb. If they get clogged up, the motor cannot accellerate properly. While you have the fuel inlet line off of the carbs, blow back throuh it with the fuel selector valve in the "on" position, then in the "res" position to be sure that valve is not clogged up.

Using a voltmeter, see how much voltage is inthe battery when the motor is not running. Start the motor, rev to 4000 rpm and check it again. It should read at least 13.1 volts or more, up to 15 Volts. If it reads less than 13.1 or more than 15 volts, replace the rectifier in the grey electrical box up front.

Any damage to the impellor or wear ring needs to be repaired. Remove the pump and inspect both. Impros can refurbish your impellor. A new wear ring is always a good idea.

Do not even consider modifying this motor until you know it runs correctly and is in good mechanical condition.

My older ski 93 spx 580 has a problem , it starts in the water fine , idles out , i take off get runs fine WOT for about 10 seconds then starts to bogg after just a few seconds it clears up and runs fine the rest of the day only doing this at start up, my 96 xp i have also noticed doing almost identical the same thing last couple of seasons, but recently its like when it starts bogging its alot worse , there are days though that it will never miss a lick, others when i just put it back on the tralier and go home. Ever here of this problem? it to me fills like its fuel realated but not real sure.

Thanks Bill for the suggestions, what is the average life for a stock engine in hours what should i look for if mine might be getting ready to lay down, can you tell by compression only or should i pull the head? it still feels strong with power, just here a pump rattle when on the trailer and i spin it a good rpm is that normal oh me many questions and possiblitys in my mind thanks.....

Compression will tell you alot to begin with. When did you last rebuild the carbs not clean them rebuild them.? Have you opened the carbs to see if the filters are clean or clogged. Start there also check the fuel selector valve.

as far as engine wise i have only cleaned the metal screens in the air box which where very nasty! and the filter under the handle bars once.rave valve cleaning and pump oil, other than that theres never been anything else ever messed with in the last 8 years of its life that i know of. im going to get the carbs off soon as i get a chance, will removeing the carbs require new gaskets of any sort? hey how im giving things wrong that i notice........in the last 3 years or so lol....seriously my i notice some viberation on planning out i took the seat off and watched the driveshaft, i saw water coming in around that "carbon seal thing area". what do i do to fix this or is it normal to see a little splash of water coming from there when putting a load on it? thanks guys im just trying to get my ski back in some of her famous glory........

no water should come for the carbon seal , check your engine mounts { pull on the engine see if it moves } check the carbon ring for uneven wear . you will prob, need kits for your carbs get compleat kits then get to work

Be sure to replace all of your fuel lines. and install a inline fuel filter on the line before your carbs after you clean the little filters in the carbs. I had the exact same problems. First time cleaning the filters fixed the bog second time it was the fuel lines themselves causing the bog.

There is no "average life" of a pwc motor.

It all depends upon owner maintence and some form of luck, good or bad. Luck improves alot with good maintence.

When you remove the seat and start the motor, listen for clattering or knocking sounds coming from inside the motor. Do a compression test, both clyinders should have equal ( close) compression numbers.
Looking at piston tops will probably not tell you anything unless they are trashed badly.

Re: 96 xp 3 Long Questions build up/ problems

all the engine mounts are tight no play with the engine how ever i did fail to mention i did replace a rear mount some time back, had had run the ski with a broken one a few times before i noticed it was indeed broke, i replaced that mount with a new one and kept the old shim right where it was. when just replaceing one mount should i have realigned the pump? would the running with a broke mount a few time cause it to wear funny and be leaking now? where can i get a new seal? thanks guys
