  • To Fix or Not to Fix?

I have a 1996 SeaDoo GSX. The engine won't turn over, the starter make a loud "clank" then nothing, I tried turning the flywheel but it won't budge so I have a feeling it's a rusted engine or bent rods or gremlins.

I''ve called a few places and have been getting prices that range from $1850.00 to $3200.00 to rebuild the engine. SInce i'm pretty new at this, is it worth it to fix? Do I have any options when it comes to repairing the engine. SHould I buy a new one (if they sell them) or rebuild?

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    BTW.... great forum!

Well, depends on the history of the ski and what actually happened to caused it to be seized if that's the case.

If all you need is a rebuilt shortblock and a carb rebuild, then keeping the ski is probably worth it if it's in sound shape.

If you're at all handy with tools you can probably swap in an SBT rebuild.. which, if your motor is a 787, starts at $799...

Depends on how attached you are to the ski and what you are willing to do.

I had something similar happen to my '97 yamaha gp1200. Marina quoted $3000 to replace the engine. I only paid $3000 for the whole ski. A ski with a blown motor isn't worth much. Selling is the easiest option. Fixing yourself is challenging, but I've found it to be "fun".

With new parts and such I probably paid about $1500 to restore my ski (that included hull stress crack repairs). So, a the end of the day I have a ski to ride ... and if I'm lucky I can recoup more money than what I wuold have selling it broken.

delta, think about it. As it is, it's probably not worth much. If you're at all interested in doing it yourself, spend the money on an SBT engine. FIRST, do some more tests to find out if indeed it's the engine (unless you're convinced). the $800 or so bucks you spend, even if it's $1500 by the time you do 'everything' (like why did it break, did the oil pump go? do the carbs need rebuilt?) you'll have a ski worth lots more fun, hopefully a couple hundred more hours. either that or you'll be spending two to three times that for an older used ski, or 10 times that on a new ski.

If it's a 1-grand fix, lots of people wouldn't mind being in your shoes.... compared to buying a new one anyway. None of us wants our engine to break though.

          Broken ski, worthless.
Cost to fix, half of what it is worth in good running condition.
A summer of fun with your friends and family, PRICELESS !

Call SBT today if you feel capable of DIY. ( the no fault warranty may come in handy if you are not as good a mechanic as you think you are) :)

Call a independant PWC repair shop if you want it done professionally, with a SBT warranty.

Check the pump to make sure that is not your problem. If it is locked and bound, nothing will turn.

if the ski is clean fix it , with a company like SBT you can afford not to , if you if you put a SBT engine in it just to sell it you would be selling a ski with a warranty :-) for the extra few bucks get the 2 yr warranty its well worth it BUT pull your pump and make sure its the engine first :-)
