  • Opened 720 engine up-no crankcase gasketseal!

    Hi everyone,

I just finished pulling apart my engine (720 rotax) and was surprised to see that there was no gasket/sealant or anything between the 2 crankcase castings. The only thing i found to fill any possible air gaps was oil! Is there supposed to be some kind of gasket there?

If there is supposed to be a gasket i am even more surprised-the engine was still running well and it's in excellent condition on the inside (no marks on the cylinders, crankshaft not out of spec, etc-i pulled it apart to do a piston change, replace the crankshaft seals and generally do some preventative maintenance. The reason for this is i have a factory pipe on my ski and didn't want to wait till the engine blew up.

Has anyone had a similar experience with the no gasket thingy?

    Thanks.

I assure you there was sealer there. Factory engines have a very thin coating of case sealer that would appear to be an oil like substance to someone unfamiliar to them.
