  • flooded SBT engine with water

I recently towed my 97 1100stx (brand new SBT engine) and flooded the engine. I punped out the engine (next day) by removing the plugs, sprayed WD40 peridically while doing so) replaced the plugs and got the ski to run. reading the Kawaski owners manual, it says :

"if water is left in the engine more than a few hours, it will destroy the crankshaft bearings and damage internal engine parts"

How big of a problem do I have?

When you got it to run you should have ridden it HARD for at least 30 minutes or so.

    Also, fresh or salt water?

It was fresh water. I got it to run in the grage (where it is now), so I have not run it hard yet.

with freshwater your prob ok but you might want to run some extra oil in the next tank of fuel and if under warranty run it a lot :-)

            Thanks,

I ran it last night, about 3/4 tank of gas pretty hard. Runs well, so I do not think I have a problem.

Is ther any way to tow this ski safely (not flooding engine etc.) My typical cruising speed is 15 - 20 mph. The owners manual says do not tow over 5 mph.

Freinds who have Sea Doos clamp the exhaust hose when they tow, but it looks like a pain to get acess to it on the Kawaski I have.

Man i have a zxi too, clamp that hose if u wanna tow it. It is easy to get to, just follow it from the pump and clamp it at the first spot u can reach.

                Thanks!

I assume you are talking about the exhaust hose?

No, they are talking about the hose that brings cooling water from your pump to your engine. When the ski is running the pump creates pressure that pushes water through the hose and into your engine. The exhaust then pumps the excess water back out. When you tow at speed the water rushing into the intake duct creates pressure in the pump. That pumps water into your engine but the non running engine does not pump the excess out. It fills up your engine.

If you clamp the water hose running from the pump to the engine you block off the water flow when towing. Of course if you forget to remove the clamp when you run you will have the opposite problem. A toested engine due to no cooling water.

Re: flooded SBT engine with water

I have not had an occasion to tow since I posted this qurestion . . . but have a need for clarification. I have two hoses (other than the large exhaust hose) that leave the exhaust manifold, one to the top of the engine (head) and the other to the front, where one may normally see a water pump on a automivice engine. Is this the pump that we are talking about?

                    Thanks

Sorry to bring this back up but is this covered by the SBT warranty if someone were to get water in the engine after towing. Obviously if the engine breaks down and you have to be towed it wasn't the waters fault to begin with.
