  • Newbie with questions... GP1200 1200R OR 1300R ?

I am getting back into riding (after a 10 year delay) since I FINALLY closed on my house. :emoticonc In reading over older posts, I felt that direct answers that I couldn't find would save me hundreds (or thousands) of $ on a ski. Yamaha was the obvious choice (from growing up with a waverunner III).I want to get into IJSBA racing either in sport class or runabout. I'd also like to wave jump though. From what I read, the 97-99 GP1200 's are the best power-weight ratio, therefore the most adept for wave jumping.
What I want to know is:

    1) Would moving up to a GP1200R or 1300R provide enough advantage racing to justify not getting a GP1200?

    2) Are the performance advantages of a GP1200r and or 1300R that much greater than a GP1200?

    3) Buying 2 skii's may be an option if I can find the right price. One for fun (jumping) and one to race. What would be the best choice in that case?

I know alot of these specs can be found, but I want to know what you guys have experienced or seen other ski's do. After all, what a paper says and how the world works are 2 different things.

    Thanks,
    Max

As of yet, I haven't heard or read anything about the fx140. I'll look into it, but thats the first time I've heard it brought up to wavejump and/or race.... is this becoming a popular ski to race or jump?

I have a XP and 1200GPR both are great in the waves......

the XP is much more fun in the waves, BUT very tiring.

I jump all day on my GPR, but not with a full tank of gas bad things happen

A stock 05 1300 will run from 67-69mph stock. You simply cannot beat the ski for fast cruising. It's not as playful as a smaller ski...say a blaster, xp, hx, raider etc....but for all out power...it's go plenty.

              I have a '97 gp1200 and an '00 gp1200r.

I'm not into racing, but I can say both are good skis. The GPR is excellent on longer trips and in chop, the heavy hull just makes the ride very nice. None of the gp1200's keep up to me.

My '97 is much easier to jump. In 3' waves, the '97 will jump nicely, and the R will just crush the wave. On bigger waves however there is a hug difference. WIth 5' - 10' waves, it is much easier to screw up and hurt yourself on a gp1200 than on an R. The gp1200 will also give you a more bone jarring landing. You can do almost no wrong jumping an R in big waves.

I guess it depends on how much money you have and what you plan on doing.

If I were you and had to choose one ski, I would go with a new 1300r; but a used gp1200 will definitely be less $$$

Hmm, what do you mean by that 1fast?

Other than the horrible abuse I put my R though, it's held up pretty well.

I did discover today that the plastic over in front by my storage compartment was breaking free, so I took it all off to repair.

Other than that I haven't really had any seams come apart.

'05 GP1300R has 170hp and NO power valves to worry about. Good hull design with updates. All prior year "R' models had powervalves which are good if up dated or aftermarket valves are installed.
