  • Port Engine not feeling well

Took the boat out this weekend and ran into some problems.

First half of the day the boat ran fine. Later on we started hearing a ticking sound so opened up the engine compartment and it sounded like a rock tumbling around in a can. Let the engine just set and idle for a little bit and the sound would go away.

At the same time we found the engine wouldn't stay running unless you pushed the throttle up so I turned the idle screw up and that seemed to work but the engine is kind of sluggish getting to full power.

Next we started noticing in a hard turn the engine would lose RPM and then jump back up after you straightened out.

Last run of the day taking it back to the dock it ran fine except for the sluggish throttle response. Got to the dock and had to wait for the crowd ahead to get their boats out so shut down the engines and when I went back to start it, it wouldn't start. Changed the spark plug and it started for a few seconds and then no start after that. Engine turns over just fine though.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

We are considering just ordering a new engine but not sure if I want to do that yet.

sounds like its in need of carb work , also check your fuel valve it has to be very free , if its stiff its bad . the first thing for you to do is a compression check on the engine .

Well I did the compression test and my guess is, it doesn't fall within specs.

The aft cylinder is 150psi and the fwd cylinder is 180psi.

Does this mean the engine is toast?

How many times did you run the test if at least three with same readign then yes you have something going on in there you shouldnt and need to pull the head and see what things look like.

Yep. I did the test 4 times and each time there wasn't over a 5psi difference.

Think it just might be time to replace the motor all together.

It is cheaper to buy an SBT rebuild than to rebuild yourself and have the one year no fault warranty. I would look at the cylinders under the head and see if you can tell what damage there is. You should not be at 180 on one and 150 on the other no more than 5% difference. My advice as always is not to run it until you get it fixed or it WILL cost you more money than need be.

              OK. Have a new question.

How hard would it be to install the 717 engine instead of the 657x?

Also, does anyone know how long it would take to get the engine from SBT to Washington state?

depends on what you wanted to pay for shipping but you have to buy what you have or they charge core charge.

180 is to high , 150 is right for that engine , i would guess your guage is off if you did not test the other engine yet do it to see what you get .

you could swap for 717s but you would need to get some cores to trade in . but your not going to see a differnce worth the swap .

Re: Port Engine not feeling well

Took your advice and did a compression check on the other engine and both cylinders show 160psi. Did 4 checks and same each time.

Went back and checked the port engine again and it's still 180psi and 150psi.

Going to pull the head tomorrow and take a look.
