  • 1998 GSX Limited - Ate part of a Ski Rope!!!

I had the ski out yesterday pulling the kids on a tube and somehow the pull rope (nylon ski rope) got sucked into the ski. It seems like it ground up about a two foot piece. The ski runs fine but seems like it has less pull out of the hole than it did before. The high end speed is still there though. I had a couple other people give it a test run and they say it's fine. I'm anal, I think it's a little slow and has more vibration out of the hole. Did I damage anything when it ate the rope???

Did you remove the rope from around the driveshaft?

As much as I could see. You think the rope may still be inside??

How would I know? Get under there with a flashlight and look.

Sorry I forgot your crystal balls were broke. I'll take a look after work. Thanks for the kick in the right direction :)

It is possible that the rope did some damage to the driveshaft and/or impellor.

Look for excessive clearance between the impeller and housing.
Can you hear metal on metal when running the ski out of the water?

I think damage is unlikely for a normal ski rope. I've had friends run over similar things (at idle) - unwrap - no problems.

No grinding or unusually noises. It just seems to vibrate a little more out of the hole than it did before it ate the rope. There may be a piece of it wrapped up that is throwing eveything off balance a bit?? I'll give it a good look through tonight. We'll see what I find. Thanks

Start the engine and look at the drive shaft. is it straight and true. My ski ate a rope and I will be replacing the drive shaft. it is only 1/8" out of being truely straight.
