  • Voltage Regulator Meltdown

Just put a new motor in 97 XP. Ran great for about 3 hrs, then smelled burning. Lifted the hood, and the regulator got so hot it melted away from the MPEM and melted some of the hull styrofoam.

What should I look for aside just throwing another regulator in there?

check your mpem for damage . its a common problem on 97xps , it gets wet a lot

Could be an indication of a short in the stator.

        Re: Voltage Regulator Meltdown

After a little probing today, I noticed a couple of things.

#1 - I pulled the regulator out of the boat, and replaced the 15amp main fuse in the electrical box. Boat fired right up. I put a meter to test the stator, got about .9-1.0 ohms between all three leads w/o boat running. Running, she generating about 40v between all leads at idle.

#2 - The ground connection in the small electrical box (bolt that goes through the coil and grounds the coil itself, solenoid, and MPEM to the stator was very corroded. I assume the regulator could not discharge excess current (if thats what it does) to ground.

This boat was sunk, so corrosion will always be an issue that will need to be dealt with.
