  • RAVE valves stuck open

My 2002 RX DI has a low end bogg. After some board reading, and looking at the ski, I found out that the RAVE valves are stuck in the open position as soon as I turn on the engine. I turned the engine on, with the caps off and tried to push down on the RAVE valves and it took all I had to get them down a bit. I am 100% sure the springs are not strong enough to keep the valves down. I pulled them out, cleaned them, but they keep staying up. It is as if the air gets into the top part of the pistons to get the valves up, but the air doesn't come out from anywhere. Someone please help! I live in Alberta, Canada and the summer days left are few.

pull them out and clean the carbon off them before they break and fall in the engine .

ok you did clean them , did you clean the carbon off the cyl ? they should move up and down with ease and the spring will push them down with the caps on if there clean

As I have mentioned before, I already cleaned them. You can almost see your reflection on them. Its not internal, it has to do with the supply of air that lifts them up and keeps them there.

do they move free with the engine not running ?

When engine is off, I can blow the valves out with my lungs, and I can easily pull them in and out with my fingers.

then it would be the springs , could they have been changed out before ?

if you can post some pix of the springs

I'll post a picture of the springs if you want, but I assure you, they look brand new. Still have that colourful metallic look to them, very "springy". The ski only has 70 hours on it.

                Re: RAVE valves stuck open

Replace the rave valve solenoid, and blow through the small black lines to be sure they are clear. ( you cannot blow back through the one that connects to the motor), but you can blow through the line that vents out of the ski to release the pressure. Evidently, your solenoid valve is stuck open allowing the case pressure through and into the rave valves.

Sea Doo did not make any motors with lighter than normal springs.

                  Re: RAVE valves stuck open

Thanks Rick, I think I may just do that. Now is the rave valve solenoid the little black plastic component attached to electrical wires, located right on top of the direct fuel injection module?I see 4 tubes attached to it, one of them being the pump, other rave valves and two other things under the motor? The thing looks like its 2 inches long, 1 wide and 1 high... very small. Thanks for your help, just want to make sure before I buy a new one.

                        Re: RAVE valves stuck open

Yes that is it. You should test it before you replace it. Connect a 12V battery to the wires while blowing through the hose. It should open and close as you apply and remove the 12v power.

                          Re: RAVE valves stuck open

If the solenoid works, and the pressure tubes are all good for airflow, do you think it could be a problem with the mpem? I haven't checked with the solenoid yet because its been raining for a week straight here. Word of advice, don't more to Calgary if you love hot weather and lakes, because neither can be found here. Thanks again for your help Bill!

You do not need good weather to test the solenoid. You need a 12V battery and two jumper leads.

                              Re: RAVE valves stuck open

Obviously you've never been to Calgary :) the rain here feels like ice crystals. I won't go outside to take out a part if its raining. I don't have a garage. But anyways, back to the "what if" statement. If the solenoid is OK, and tubes are OK, does it mean that the MPEM is not OK to let the valves go back down? Because I don't know what else it could be. The weather is nice now, so I'll give it a test with a 12 volter. Thanks for all your help Bill, you're the best!
