  • substitue for Loctite 515

    Greetings:
I am rebuilding a 787 engine and I wanted to know if there is alternate product that i can use, hard to find that 515 sealer around here. Will any permatex flanger sealer do the trick? I located one product by loctite called "gasket maker stick" flange sealant item #39154. Your thoughts.

Loctite 515 was replaced with Loctite 518 several years ago, use Loctite 518. NAPA carries it.

i haven't seen many places around the hollywood area that sell loctite brand. i've only seen the other permatex ones. there are no numbers on the product and it'sonly labeled by teh color. i have been to an authorized dealer that sells loctite and they are expensive.

you're best bet would be this online hardware store that sells any loctite you need.

permatex anaerobic sealer is basically the same stuff, even looks/smells same. most napa stores will cross reference that permatex anaerobic if loctite is not available. that's what i've always used. not much cheaper then loctite brand, it's just expensive stuff.
online loctite here if u want the real stuff- they usually fair price -

          That's EXACTLY WHY

I recommended that they go to a NAPA store.

            Re: substitue for Loctite 515

unfortunantly my napa doesn't carry 515-purple or 518-red loctite which is an anerobic gasket maker. they do carry the permatex as a substitute and i have used it without issue as a substitute for 515/518 - just my .02 looks like picture.
you can get loctite 515 at midwayautosupply.com - not much difference between 515 and 518 - temperature range and gap fill are equal, only viscosity and cure time differ.

                  Re: substitue for Loctite 515

Up until 1999 Permatex was a subsidiary of LocTite corporation....When they split, they both continued basically the same product lines.....The Permatex 50ml tube p/n {51813} is the identical version of the LocTite 50ml tube p/n {51831} The part numbers are similar, so are the products.. I found 39151, 39152, and 39153, but no reference to 39154 on the loctite website....the three numbers listed are a gasket/flange sealer 548 that is similar to the 515/518 product in that is an anerobic type sealer, but has different sealing characteristics, and comes in a stick form for "easier" application. If you choose this product make absolutely sure that you follow all of the instruction sheet information exactly or you may end up having to pull everything apart and reseal it.

Again, this is exactly why I suggested NAPA, as they can offer the correct LocTite and/or Permatex equivalent products

IMO - the last place I would send anyone questioning type of sealent for specific PWC application is counter help at local auto parts, even a NAPA - it's not the advise it used to be around TN. Carlee stopped in a good place to ask people who know and got lots of good suggestions. Three bond 1105 and 1211 is a staple sealant for most kawi and yama people; yamabond also works. Good links to reasonable priced Loctite via mail order.

Carlee don't forget the leak down after assembly and from my past bad experiences, ask a forum or powersports dealer for advise before counter help at local auto parts store.

I'll go back to lurking before i'm off yet another forum - :emoticonw

Cool - Thanks guys I found it using the part numbers you supplied. I ended up finding it at O'reilly's Auto parts. They stock it under the permatex number.
