  • SBT motor running hot??

New SBT motor installed. Currently going through break-in, and seems to be running hot. I say that because the I can bearly keep my hands on the cylinders after running in the water for a few minutes.

    Could this be normal break-in?

Anyway, before I run it any more I want to make sure my over heat buzzer is working. How can I test the buzzer and temp sensor?

That's normal - it's an engine, not an ice maker :)

The sensor can be tested by placing it in boiling water and measuring the reistance change. If your ski beeps with your lanyard, the buzzer works.

      WOW - that's real funny ;)

But seriously - it just seems to hot for running a short time at low rpms. With my last motor I could hold the plugs in my hand, or hold on the cylinders sides for 10 seconds or so after running WOT.

Yes, the buzzer doesn't beep when the lanyard is attached.

Well...I have yet to see an engine I could hold my hand on for 10 seconds after a good WOT run :) In fact I can't even think of an occasion where I would want or need to do that. Were you feeling for a heartbeat? Or perhaps you are exagurating a bit...

But a very warm to hot engine after running for a few minutes is normal.

Hook your buzzer wires to a battery to test.

To test the buzzer, ground the wire to the sensor. It will make the beeper beep if it is a good beeper.

If you think your motor is too hot, then make sure the water is circulating through it properly.
Did you rebuild the carbs before you ran the new engine? A lean running motor will run hot.

We just installed a 787 SBT Rebuild in our GSX and even after waiting the 30 minute cool down between runs, with the seat off in 80 degree temps it was still very warm. Most rebuilt engines regardless of type will run a little warmer until broke in. Sounds pretty normal to me.

so if the "key" is in and you stick the sensor in boiling water with the engine running it will kill the engine?

                  No but it should beep.

                      Correct.

And if Chris already told you it's bad...get a new one.

                        Re: SBT motor running hot??

The overheat sensor does not shut off the ignition if the motor runs too hot. It only makes the beeper beep a continious tone.

Chris, I not sure it is bad, because "sometimes" it will beep when the key is attached. Thats why I need to test.

Oh, and that dot lasted about a day until it disapeared.

                              Tom,
Neither of which has a darn thing to do with the overheat sensor.

If it beeps when you attach the lanyard, it is telling you the ignition is armed. If it beeps, the beeper does work.

For some unknown reason, some SD's quit beeping when the lanyard is attached, even though the beeper still functions. It is just one of those SD things.........
