  • Stuck bearing parts

I own a 1997 Kawasaki 1100STX. In the process of removing the pump to access the steering cable I noticed that one of the bearings was completely destroyed. Some of the balls were sheared in half and falling out. There is no telling how long it has been like that. Luckily, there is another bearing at the end of the driveline that kept it properly aligned. Realistically, I could put it back together as-is and it will still work. BUT, I want to replace that busted bearing, for obvious reasons.

With that being said, here is my problem. The remaining parts of the busted bearing (the inner and outer rings) are stuck to the inside of the vane-guide, and to the jetpump shaft behind the impeller. Any tricks to get these things off so that I can put a new bearing in there? I think I have to remove the jetpump shaft from the impeller, but I do not know how. And the outer bearing ring is really jammed in the vane guide.

I am also looking for a service manual for a 97 Kawasaki 1100stx, but cannot seem to find one. Is there a major difference between the 1100stx and the D.I model? Thank you in advance for ANY help.

    Re: Stuck bearing parts

Realistically you cannot put it back together. Without that bearing it will destroy the entire pump if it hasn't already. Use a slide hammer to gently pull the outer race out or use a long thin punch to drive it out. The inner race is still stuck to your D.S. so you'll also have to remove that and clean up the D.S. where the new bearing will sit. The bearings are crushed like that because the front pump seal is gone and water pushed all the grease out. Make sure you carefully check the seal surface on the D.S. before re-installing, a new one may be needed.(D.S.that is)

Have one in the shop like that now. Wasted and hour trying to get the old bearing race out with no luck. Anyway the old housing was damaged by the impeller hitting it from no being held in line. Check your impeller clearence and you may need the housing and impeller as well as the bearing and seal set.

The one I am working on failed because the plastic cap at the end of the pump cone was cracked and let water inside the pump.

You do need to replace the bearing and no there is no differnece in a D.I. pump to yours. It does require a special tool to remove the impellar. Use a torch with MAP gas or Propane to heat the old bearing to remove it. And put the new bearing in the freezer for about 20 min prior to install. Torch is also needed to remove impellar.

Thank all of you for your bits of advice, they are very much appreciated.

I put the pump back together as-is and it works. The impeller does not scrub at all. I think I could run it the way it is for the remainder of the season and I will really fix it over the winter. I do not race, I just go out with my wife and two kids (3 & 4) for little, slow, rides. Trust me, I can rag the hell out of it. But knowing it's current condition, I won't.

As far as the importance of the bearing being there, it seems to have worked fine this long without it. I do FULLY understand that the bearing is VERY important, but I also believe that it should be OK for short, non-strenuous trips. The second bearing at the end of the pump shaft seems to provide enough support to keep the driveline aligned. Any input?

              Re: Stuck bearing parts

Well, I ran it for the rest of the season and did not have any problems. It has been sitting for the last two months and I plan on getting it back up to 100% with income tax returns.
