  • 97 XP New SBT Motor will not start! Help

    Ok, here we go.
I have put in the new sbt motor in my 97 XP, I have also put in a brand new battery that has a good charge. I just rebuilt my carbs.
-The ski will turn over but will not fire off.
-I have a good spark at both pugs and a good battery.
-It appears that the carbs are getting fuel.
I am lost from here, any help would be great.

Does it attempt to fire at all, or just spin freely? Try a little fuel down the spark plug holes - if you really have spark at the correct time it will fire for a couple seconds. If it's burping or backfiring you probably just have the magneto cup incorrectly timed - see the tech article on it for a picture and procedures. Measure the voltage of the battery while cranking just to make sure you really have good power too. Anything below 12.5v can shut off the ignition. What caused the original engie to fail and what other repairs were made?

How was the rotary valve timed??? Did you remove the mag flywheel from the starter flywheel, if so it is possible that the spark is not properly timed...

The motor sucked up water that is why I had to rpl it.

I am going to try putting a little gas in the spark plug holes and see what happens tomorrow.
-the battery is good and has a fresh charge, so it is not the battery.

Don't assume things. Until you do a test you don't KNOW what it is or isn't. Even if the battery is good, just for example - a bad coil can drag down the voltage - we just saw it here and chased our tails for a few hours with new batteries. I'm not saying that's what the problem is - but I don't like it when people casually dismiss possibilites in general. Obviously something has been overlooked and frankly it could be anywhere until everything is actually tested. Make no assumptions and you'll fix it ASAP.

I timed the ski with the timing wheel from SBT.

On the battery issue, the Voltage was fine, I know this because I tested it. That is why there is a new battery in the ski, because the the old battery would turn the ski over but the battery was actually bad.
