  • Having issues removing flywheel from hurricane.

I got the harmonic balancer from autozone... I'm concerend about stripping out the bolt holes on the flywheel. Is there a better tool for this job?

Do a search and read up. Impact gun, heat and hammer. Pop goes the flywheel!

Make sure to give it more than "just a few turns" and you'll be ok. Just don't go too far or you'll hit the stator ;)

I used an impact gun and ended up breaking it free with my 1/2" long breaker bar... it's tough.

Perhaps I am using the wrong tool. I don't know how an impact gun would help... The tool I have has three screws.. You screw them into the flywheel and then you run a main bolt through and it pries it off. Don't see how an impact gun would help here. I'm concerened about stripping the holes.

It is not about the "tool". It is about the hammering action of the impact gun that pops the flywheel off.

What we do is apply as much force as we think the bolts will stand without pulling out. Using a heavy hammer, give the center bolt a whack with the hammer. This will sometimes cause enough viberation to pop the flywheel loose.
If not, try heating the very center of the flywheel around the tapered area that fits over the snout of the crankshaft.

Sometimes, just leaving it sit for awhile, like overnight, with pressure on the center bolt of the puller tool will pop it loose.

Bill is right! On my seadoo, i used a harmonic balancer (don't screw the bolts in too far as your could damage the stator wires). I tightened it up really tight and still the mag flywheel would not come of...I got a hammer, gave the centre tightening rod on the harmonic balancer 5 moderate taps....still no result. I craked the shits and 5 minutes later the flywheel magically popped off all by itself when i was in another room. Weird, i don't understand why, but maybe give it a go.

yup there is ;). Its the Polaris, pwc flywheel puller, forget the part#, but it is the lord god king of flywheel pullers. I have had one for about 7 years now and it has pulled every flywheel i've put it to. i think they are around $100.00, but its the last flywheel puller you will ever have to buy, it weighs about 3 ponds and snug securely against the face of the flywheel the center bolt is 3/4". It pops EVERYTHING.

I think i may have mention this before.

Make sure you only thread the 3 bolts in about 1/4", that way they dont hit the stator.

              4 steps of flywheel removal

              1. normal method
              2. beat it
              3. heat it and beat it
              4. mistreat it :)

I think I may switch to step 4 soon.

put the puller on there, the three little bolts about 4-5 turns in and the main bolt snug up as tight as you can, so it kind of feels like its going to bend the small bolts, use an impact to on that bolt if you have one, and then apply some heat to the center around the shaft and it will pop, under the pressure and the expansion from the heat., make sure you apply loctitie on the shaft with the new flywheel.

Watcon has this puller and it's never failed me yet, no heat, no beating on anything, POP and it's off. Every tool box should have this bad boy!!!

                        Heavy Duty Flywheel Puller
This is a top quality flywheel puller!
The puller body is chrome plated and has a 21mm center puller bolt, the multiple puller slots allow enough adjustment to remove flywheels on virtually all watercraft, most snowmobiles and maybe a few lawnmowers. Comes complete with hardened steel 6 & 8mm puller bolts. Money back guarantee!

WOW! Now THATS what I need. I just don't want to spend $100.00 for one. ;)

And the answer is currently no. I've had enough pressure to bend the heads on all the bolts. Used penetraiting oil, left pressure and still a no.:emoticonr

Next stop, I need to pull the motor so i can get a good swing at the puller.

So do i need to remove the carbs to pull this 2 cyl motor from the hurricane? I have all the motor mount nuts off and the motor makes it out a few inches but seems to be caught on the drive shaft. :emotredf

You know what.... I really ought to up the hundred bucks and buy this puller, it seems like it would get the job done. And probably save me fortuns in mediacl bills after this ski falls off the stand with me in it trying to pull the motor thus landing on my Sxi and my honda shadow causing it to tip over on the corvette and finally landing on one of the dogs.:popc

Where can I get one? Anyone want to "rent" one with a paypal deposit?

Oh, and happy holidays to everyone. After Jan 1 there is nothing good left to having winter. I'm begining to Jones about spring. Rode the bike today in 45 degree weather and liked it.:emoticonn
