1997 Seadoo GS prob with new SBT engine?

We have two Seadoos a GTI and a GS. Both have the 717 engine. The first engine replacement went off without a hitch. The problem is with the second one does not want to run properly. It seems like a timing problem, we have adjusted the stator several times including where it is now on the marks. The problem is I can get it to idle and run good for a while, but it ends up dying and will not restart. It doesn't want to turn over. When I do get the engine running again it seems to run rough and noisy (internal rattling). The only difference between the installs is I was not around when the rotary valve was installed on the second engine and there was a tiny water leak in the tuned pipe assembly (which was corrected with JB Weld). I do not have a timing light and I am at my wits end and would like to take it somewhere to have it looked at but the local Seadoo dealer in Columbia SC has been a nightmare. I do not know of anyone in the Charlotte area that is reliable. Any suggestions or reference technicians.

I cannot give you the name of anyone in the Charlotte area to look at it, but even if the timing of the ignition or RV were totally off, it should not be making those types of noises ( rattling) from the engine. Sounds like you may have a more serious problem.

Who did the rebuilding of the motor? Is it possible they put the pistons in backwards?

It is a rebuilt SBT engine. I was hoping there were some things I could check like compression, etc that may tell me i need to send it back while it is still under warranty. Is there anything I should check before taking to a qualified dealer?

You should always check compression before taking it in or sending it back to SBT.
You could remove the bolt on parts that were put onto the motor and make sure they are good and properly installed.
