  • 1996 Seadoo GTX Low COMPRESSION FRONT

I have bought a 96 GTX from a friend and at the end of this summer , He was running down the lake a ski bogged and died. Compression 140 in rear 60 in front.
Ski only has 65 hours , It sits alot. Before I start taking it apart. Could the RAVE exhaust or something else be causing this( Motor didn't make any strange noises, Just died like you had pull kill switch) I see a lot of forums talking about the rear cylinder compression is low,but not the front. Any Help would be Great.

if i was to guess , i would say low hrs = clogged carbs = burnt piston . but could anything . at the least you will need to take the topend off to see what happin and where ytou will need to go with it .

Well thats not what I wanted to hear, but thats what I was expecting. Is there a lot of difference in building a top-end in a seadoo compared to Kawasaki. I have built Kawasakis but no Rotex?

there about the same . but you should always inspect the crank before putting a new topend on . along with everything else .

Re: 1996 Seadoo GTX Low COMPRESSION FRONT

I have now pulled the topend off and the ring was broken and scraped some metal off the piston. Have new topend kit on the way,but bottum end seems ok, Have sprayed down several times with fogging oil and used magnet and vacumed to clean out case . Do you have any more suggestion to insure all the metal particals are gone, short of removing motor and building bottum too. found no metal in bottum of case all seemed to be in block webbing at bottum of piston bore. Thanks MRG120...................

Did you find out what caused the ring to fail? No oil?, lean carb? I've put top ends in w/o doing the bottem end diassenbly, but it's not the best idea. in the long run It's always better to check the whole thing out. Just make sure you know what caused it to fail.

Ski had sit up for a long time ( only 68 hours on ski ) checked oil flow from pump and the bad cylinders line flowed noticeble less oil. Have removed tank and all lines ,will clean tank replace lines and maybe pump just to be safe. I'm assuming that this was the problem.

Thanks alot for help maybe I can go the rest of the way without any problems

i hope you did not magnatize the bearings . never use a magnet in a engine :-(

Be sure to clean the filters inside of the carbs.
I would not "assume" the oil injector was a problem. It may be, but with only 68 hours on it, I doubt it. Oil flow is difficult, at best, to measure, and it takes very little to lubricate the motor.
When I see a broken ring, my first thoughts are that the engine ran too lean on fuel, as that is usually the cause of broken rings.
When the clyinder runs lean on oil, it will make the piston skirts a dark grey and feel and look like they are covered with graphite. Everything in there will look dry.
If you have a digital camera, give us a picture of the piston.

If there was noticably less oil in the oil line corresponding to the blown cylinder, replace the check valves on the oil pump. Your oil pump should be fine considering it has only 68 hours on it.

Just gets deeper ever day !!! Have found the cause of the problem. In general clean up and inspection noticed that when I would turn the crank.Rotary Valve does not, I guess I'm going to be learn alot about the Rotex motor on this one. Well I guess it's good to know. Should I rebuild or just replace motor.

The SBT engine is the way to go , Parts and machine work will add up almost to what a new sbt will and the warrenty can't be beat !!!!!!!!!! :emoticont

Ok, Before I order a new motor I have a 787 and a 951 core motor. I'm sure you know whats next... Can I replace 787 with 951 and use all external parts aside from building carbs to accomidate more fuel. I haven't look at the motors side by side , The 951 might be a totally different animal. P.S. The 951 is cab motor not DI..

                            Thanks MRG120

Not a chance, almost nothing off a 787 will fit onto a 951.
