  • Charging System Inspection Needle Adapters Set

I want to check my charging system on my 2001, 1100 STX DI.
I found the plugs where the test prongs insert. The book calls for the special tools Needle Adapter Set 57001-1457. I have a pair of tip extensions. The extensions are made of stainless steel with a polished point. The outside Dia of the needle is .045" The needles are 4" long, and have a sharp end.
Could I cause any problems by inserting these needles into the plug?
If I do use the tester, what should I use for a ground?

I had read the service manual incorrectly. I had the wrong plug.
Having never tested the electrical system before I found out that you need to insert the probe threw thru the plastic wire cover.
Trying to maintain 2400 rpm was difficult. I got almost 14 Volts on the charging voltage testn (Battery Charging).
At 1100 rpm I got around 34 Volts and around 2400 rpm, I got 44 plus Volts on the charging voltage test (Injector and Ignition Operation).
    Are these test correct?

On my previous post I mentioned codes 16 and 17 showed up. I have cleared the codes. If there was a problem with the flywheel or charging system would the codes re-appear?

      According to the Service Manual:

      1) Battery charging (@2400 rpm): ~13V
You measured: 12V *That's within spec.

      2) Injector & Ignition test (@2400 rpm): ~45V
      You measured: 44V * That's within spec.

      3) Injector & Ignition (engine cranking): ~20V
You measured: 36V at 1100 rpm Was this the cranking test? If so, this is out of spec.

The codes will re-appear if there is fact a intermittent problem. Solid failure codes won't go away until the problem is resolved directly. You can demonstrate this by disconnecting the CPS, which will give you a code 16. Plug it back in and the failure disappears.

16 and 17 will caused by a marginal battery.
