  • piston & ring sets?

Dumb question, but i have to ask!

In the store, are the pistons for a polaris 750 $95 for all 3, or just 1?

    Piston prices are per piston.

        Here's another question.

Does sbt match the pistons to the cylinders for each engine, or just bore to spec and install pistons that are in spec? I ask because i have a holed piston, and was wondering if i could get away with just dropping in a new one and honing the cylinder. It is an sbt engine. Also, have the pistons changed at all since 01? ie. would i have any issues running 2 old and 1 new piston? Is this the sbt serial # 20172 does that help in figuring out what piston i need?

        Sorry for all the questions.

        Thanks for the help,
        Mike

No the pistons have not changed specs. No you can not just drop in any ol piston, you must always have the piston in hand to hone to size, and all ours are always matched to the cylinder.

ok. so does that mean that if i order a piston, there is a possibility that it will be too small for the bore? I really, really want to avoid overboring the whole engine if possible.

              Re: piston & ring sets?

All pistons vary a couple tenths brand to brand. You just need the piston in hand to set the final clearance and you need to know what the clearance is. If the cylinder wall damage is scoring, than you need to bore to the next size, if it is light scratches it may need just a little honing, If you can get away with honing then just order new rings for the size piston you have.

Yes, the correct way to bore the cylinder is to give your machine shop the pistons and rings 1st and know your clearances and let him size the cylinder bore to the piston.
