js 650-jf 650 difference

I was wondering if you can tell me the difference between the two?A few jf 650's I tore down the other day all had bad cases due to not having a slot for the locating ring on the crank.Is this the difference?

There are no distinct 650 engine designs. There are slight variations as the factory made improvements, but they are not separate models.
