  • 2001 Yamaha XLT 1200 bent spark plug tip

Riding today and it cut out, then ran rough. After checking the plugs, the middle one had the tip bent touching the electrode. Regapped, ran again, same problem. Need help with diagnosis. Thanks!

That is caused by debris - something is coming apart in your engine. Stop trying to run it or you risk more expensive repairs. Time to pull the engine and tear it down for inspection/replacement.

Pulled the cylinder head and #2 piston has "chunks" missing from above the top ring groove. They appear to be lined up with the exhaust port. Too lean a mixture?

I am having a similar problem, but have not removed the head yet. What typically causes this to happen?

Rod bearing failure, could be at the small end of the rod or the big end of the rod.
