  • Coolant temp issues ('95 Seadoo SP - 587 engine)

Got a SBT 587 engine for my '95 Seadoo SP

Had to clean out the carb first for it to run right..

Took it out yesterday for an hour or 2, it ran great.

Had a potential buyer take it out today, after about 45 mins of piddling around in the bay, the temp sensor buzzer goes off.. I noticed that it goes away when I idle up a bit.

I took it back out today, and checked the supply, return, and drain lines.. they've all got flow, but the block still gets pretty hot (hotter than 99 degrees which is where the temp sensor goes off.)..

    What else could it be?

I read that the "drain" line is supposed to have a calibrated fitting on the engine side, but when I took the hose off, it had a steady flow. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be calibrated to, but could this be a problem?

Both the exaust header and the 270° turn pipe (whatever it's called) are both cool to the touch...

Sounds like a bad sensor, they go out pretty often.

Well, normal body heat is 98.6 degrees, The book says that the sensor is supposed to "close" at 99 degrees..

tested with some hot water out of the faucet and a digital multimeter, right about the time that the water gets "hot" to the touch, the sensor closes.

seems like it works fine to me...

did I mention that the engine block is VERY hot to the touch?

No you didn't mention that, you just said pretty hot, which is normal.

If you think the block is really too hot then you have a blockage somewhere that you missed or have pump damage.

          oh jumping riverdancers!

looking in the shop manual, I must have misenterpreted?

that looks like it says 96-99 degrees C, which translates to 210 degrees F.
          Is this correct?

That's just short of boiling, and no way I would be able to hold the sensor under the faucet at that temperature...

As far as the temperature of the side of the block is concerned, I know I'm being vague and I'm sorry. at the point where the buzzer starts to go off, the side of the block is just a little bit hotter than I can stand.
I can only hold my hand against the side for about 4 seconds.

It still amazes me how so many people think you should be able to put your hand on a hot engine :)

I still think you have a bad sensor.
