SeaDoo recommends synthetic, low ash (non TCW-3) oil.

My manual here says SD reccomends the Mineral Oil on the 787's. The 951's and above, the required the Synth.

But, you can run either in the 787's.

          Re: 97 xp

I have never seen a Sea Doo manual recommend anything but the XP-S synthetic oil for a 97 XP.

Here is a clip from a 1997 Xp owners manual:

          SPX/GSX/GTX/XP Models Only

          Use only BOMBARDIER ROTAX FORMULA

          XP-S synthetic injection oil (or
          the equivalent synthetic oil).
This fully synthetic oil will provide outstanding
          cleanliness, less friction and
          wear for greater engine performance
          and durability.
          Oil Injection System
This watercraft features an oil injection
          system which does not require
          manual fuel/oil mixing.
A sufficient amount of injection oil
should be maintained in the reservoir.
NOTE: Always carry 500 mL of
          BOMBARDIER ROTAX INJECTION
          OIL.
          All Models Except HX/XP
To check oil level, remove seat to expose
oil cap; unscrew cap, wipe dipstick
then insert in the reservoir neck.
Do not screw cap. Remove dipstick
          and read the level.
Use a flexible funnel to add the required
          quantity of injection oil. Wipe
          off any oil spillage.
          HX/XP Models Only
To check oil level, open hood and verify
          level through oil reservoir. Unscrew
cap to add oil as necessary.
Use a flexible funnel to add the required
          quantity of injection oil. Wipe
          off any oil spillage.
          All Models
          - CAUTION
          Never use 4-cycle petroleum or
synthetic motor oil and never mix
          these with outboard motor oil.
Do not use NMMA TC-W, TC-W2
or TC-W3 outboard motor oils or
          other ashless type 2-cycle oil.
          Avoid mixing different brands of
API TC oil as resulting chemical
          reaction may cause severe engine
          damage.
          - CAUTION
The 787 engine requires the use
          of Bombardier Rotax Formula
          XP-S SYNTHETIC injection oil (or
          the equivalent synthetic oil). The
use of any other non-synthetic oil
may cause severe damage to internal
          parts of the engine.

          CAUTION

          Always maintain a sufficient
amount of injection oil in the
          reservoir. Check and refill every
time you refuel. Do not overfill.
the engine runs out of oil, severe
engine damage will occur. If the
          oil reservoir is found almost
empty, air can enter in the system
and it must be bled. Immediately
          refer to an authorized dealer
have the oil injection system inspected.

            Re: 97 xp

That was revised in the 1998 manual to only say 947.

The 587, 657, 717 & 787 only require regular. Use of synthetic in a 787 however will keep the RAVE valves cleaner a lot longer, and it is recommended.

Sea-Doo routinely updates specs like that. Another example was the switch from synthetic to regular for the supercharged models after the first year, via a service bulletin.

I know what you mean about Sea Doo always changing things. Good point about the update. Still, I always recommend Synthetic for 787's and up (two stroke).

              Thanks. :emoticonb

                Never a bad call for a 2 stroke :)

                    Re: 97 xp

Another good reason to run Synth, is that they are no longer making the Mineral, what you see on the shelf is it..
