  • 1997 700 Hurricane no ignition spark

Just rebuilt the top end of this motor . Cranks over just fine but am getting an intermittent spark out put. After I crank for a few seconds I lose what little spark that I had. It seems when I press the reset button the weak spark returns but goes away right away after cranking. brand new battery & plugs.
    A. what does the reset button do or whats it for? what trips it (if it is, in fact, even tripping)
    B. any suggestions??? also thedisplay screen stays on through out cranking etc

Iwent over old forums but not a lot out there on this, lots of questins but not much on options

    TRY THIS......................................

"unscrew" the spark plug boot from the spark plug wire.

clean out from both of the the spark plug boot with elctrical spray cleaner at both ends of it with a skinny small screw driver.

    leave that sparkling clean...................spotless.................. ......

then clip about 3/16 of spark plug wire from the end of the spark plug wire to "expose" new copper wire...............................

that'l for sure exclude that part of the machine from the equation.

many times that there is the problem............................

as for the white button on the black box.......................

    it should always stay in..............................................

if not there is a short somewhere causing to "trip" pop out.

    but you never know.............................................. ......

    that button can be bad...............................................

There is an ignition up date kit for the Hurricane, comes with new stator, CDI, coil and wires, they are known to fail as for the original stator wires are light weight windings and the up date is a much more heavy duty set up. I have replaced many on the early 2 cyl polaris skis with electrical issues and also will be replacing my own shortly. The part number is 2873022 and sells for $263.71 This up date kit works great. Yes it will work, the timing may be advanced slightly more.
