    Tech Tip- Break In



    2-stroke and 4-stroke watercraft engines should never be run on the garden hose for break in.



    For all engines: The maximum time any watercraft engine should be run on the garden hose should not exceed 3 minutes of running time. Drive line components can become overheated and damaged due to the lack cooling to the drive line since the watercraft is not sitting in the water. Carbon seals and bearing housings that the drive shafts run through rely on water to keep them cool.



    SeaDoo 4-Tech: Sea-Doo 4 stroke engines use a closed loop cooling system to cool their motors and a heat exchanger to remove heat from the coolant. Since the ride plate/heat exchanger works as a radiator to remove heat from the coolant it needs to be submerged in moving water so the heat can dissipate from the ride plate (heat exchanger) into the surrounding water. If the Sea-Doo 4 tech is run on the trailer with out submerging the ride plate to cool the engine coolant it will cause server damage to the bottom end of the engine. When flushing a 4-Tech motor on the garden hose the only area that gets flushed and cooled is the exhaust system, not the engine itself.



    All other watercraft engines rely on the jet pump to supply the right amount of water to cool the engines for any length of time; a garden hose is not a good way to ensure proper cooling to a new engine. Do your break in on open water.
