I just bought a used 2001 XL800 and went out on the water. When you give it gas it acts like a clutch is slipping. I know there is no clutch but what could it be? Can the pump spin and not catch the water? HELP. I found the felt packing missing on the intake, would that cause this problem?

I talked to Tom at SBT and asked if that piece of foam rubber sticking out of the intake plate could be the problem and he said yes it could allow the water intake to suck air. I promptly went out and cut a piece of good thick rubber gasket material, I removed the plate and glued it down. I went to the lake and tested. Cavitation was gone and thrust was great! I got the ski up to 52 mph. Thanks SBT and Tom!
