  • Buying a 98 yahama gp800 that cuts out at 4000 rpms

Looking to buy my buddys 98 yahama GP800. He continued to tell me that it startes ok and runs ok up until he hits about 4000 rpms then it cuts out on him. He seems to think its the cdi box but I dont want to go buy one and it not be the problem. What are some checks I can make to narrow down the cause of this problem? thanks (in advance) for your time. :)

Start by checking the thermoswitch, if it is bad it can cause this but usually cuts out at 2,500 to 3,000 rpm.

Make sure to check compression first off.

Check plug boots, they unscrew off wire, cut wire back 1/2", screw boot back on. I beleive those boots unscrew I know they do on my 97.

This could also be in your carbs.
