  • 1998 Kawasaki 900 STX - middle cylinder question

    Hi SBT Tech -

I recently purchased a motor from you and the sales/shipping process was superb. I am extremely satisfied - kudos for providing a great customer experience.

I am curious why it's so common to see the middle cylinder throw a rod on this particular motor ('98 Kawasaki 900 STX). Is there a design flaw from Kawasaki that causes this? I am familiar with the new motor break-in procedure, but does this motor require any additional "TLC" to prevent problems in the future? Or are there any tricks that you are aware of to ensure long life? I will be doing the oil pump block-off modification as I know that is a very common point of failure.

    Thanks in advance,

    Donut

I think the reason is that many of the 98 900s used the cv carbs and they are known for fuel delivery issues with age. It seems the 900s with the cdk2 carbs dont fail motors as easy, go through your carbs and inspect them well before you put your ski back into service.
