  • 98 sea doo sporster

I have a 1998 sea doo sportster 1800 twin 717 engines. Both start on land but one will not start once in water. last time compression checked it was fine, new spark plugs, new fuel filter, and I think new fuel pump too. Any other ideas?

If the rotary valve clearance is worn too far it will make starting very difficult, clearance should be no more than 18 thou between cover and face.

Thank you, would a clogged fuel line or bad fuel pump cause this?

Yes it would. having a problem with the fuel system can make starting on the water tough as well. I would be looking more at the carbs than the pump or filter. (yet, the pump is on the carbs, so that does get looked at anyhow)

thank you for your help with my engine trouble. I also have a tach that has gone out. How can I find out what other models are compatable or do I have to only use the 1998 sportster model? I have seen it on e-bay for $250 [ouch] but other 1998 models are much cheaper. Can I switch them in and out between models?

Other ones should work but I would check a wiring diagram to see if the numbers of wires that go into the gauge are the same. Also check the size of the gauge to see if it will fit in the dash.

Can you take a picture of the tach and a pic of the wires coming out of the back of it? (remove the tach). I have a few here in the garage that may just do the job?
