STX 1100 DI. hole in piston

I have a 01 Kaw STX 1100 DI. Was out the other day, and devolped a miss and low speed. Got it home and checked the plugs. All looked normal except #3. Looked wet, but had spark. Did a compression check and #3 had 0 pounds. Pulled the head and the piston had a hole in the center of the piston. No pitting or hot spots, no scoring on the piston walls or skirts. The wrist pin bearings looked great. At a lost right now. Before I install a kit, what should I check as to what could have caused the problem.

The injector could be failing or the crank may be out of index
